Bill Belichick has amassed one of the greatest résumés of any coach in NFL history during his legendary run with the New England Patriots.
How long has Belichick led the franchise?
How Long Has Bill Belichick Coached the New England Patriots?
Belichick has amassed as strong a list of accomplishments as perhaps anyone in the NFL world during his coaching career.
The legendary coach holds NFL records for Super Bowl wins (eight), Super Bowl wins as a head coach (six), total Super Bowl appearances overall and specifically as a head coach (12 and nine, respectively), playoff wins as a head coach (31) and divisional championships as a head coach (17). He is also tied for the league record with 19 playoff appearances as a head coach.
Belichick was a longtime assistant coach with the New York Giants before spending five seasons as head coach of the Cleveland Browns. He was then an assistant with the Patriots and New York Jets before turning down a chance to be the Jets’ head coach — instead taking over as New England’s leader in 2000.
Belichick has been the Patriots’ head coach ever since and is now in his 24th season on the job. He has led the franchise to Super Bowls in three of his first five seasons (2001, 2003, and 2004) before winning three more in 2014, 2016, and 2018.

Belichick ranks second all-time in wins as a head coach with 331, 16 wins shy of Don Shula’s top mark and 55 ahead of the next closest active coach, the Kansas City Chiefs’ Andy Reid.
Belichick and legendary quarterback Tom Brady combined for all six of the Super Bowls in New England.
Could Belichick’s Tenure End Soon?
There have been some indications amid a rough season for the Patriots that the 2023 campaign could perhaps be his last leading the franchise.
Rumors had long swirled around Belichick’s future given New England’s downturn in recent years, but they intensified back in October when national NFL reporter Albert Breer said Patriots owner Robert Kraft has already discussed moving on from Belichick dating back to at least January.
The franchise went a combined 25-25 in the three full seasons after Brady left ahead of the 2020 campaign and is off to a rough 2-7 start in 2023.
Speculation has long been floated that New England linebackers coach Jerod Mayo, who helped the franchise win a Super Bowl during his playing career, could be the franchise’s coach-in-waiting for the post-Belichick era.
That time could come soon if New England continues to struggle and Kraft sees the writing on the wall.
