How Long Did Tyreek Hill Play for the Chiefs? Revisiting His Career With Kansas City

Tyreek Hill spent six seasons with the Chiefs, establishing himself as one of the league's best WRs in that time. Here's a look at his career in K.C.

Tyreek Hill’s career in the NFL began with controversy on the very day he was drafted in 2016. However, as perhaps the league’s fastest player, he turned himself into arguably the league’s most dangerous deep threat at wide receiver, as well as one of the most productive.

Here’s a look back at his six seasons with the Kansas City Chiefs.

Tyreek Hill’s Impressive Career With the Kansas City Chiefs

Hill made an impact with the Chiefs almost immediately. He scored the Chiefs’ first touchdown of the 2016 season the first time he was targeted, catching a touchdown pass in the season opener against the Chargers. Kansas City would rally from 21 points down in the second half to win 33-27.

In Week 12 against the Denver Broncos, Hill had a touchdown reception, touchdown run, and a kickoff return touchdown, becoming the first player to score all three ways since Gale Sayers in 1965.

That 2016 season saw Hill used primarily as a returner, both on punts and kickoffs. His versatility resulted in Hill scoring touchdowns as a wide receiver (six), a rusher (three), a punt returner (two), and a kickoff returner (one).

He was honored after the season with the first of his three first-team All-Pro selections as a member of the Chiefs, and his only one as a kick returner.

In 2017, Hill became primarily a wide receiver and reached the 1,000-yard mark in receiving for the first time in his career (team-high 1,183). It was the first of four 1,000-yard seasons for Hill as a receiver.

Hill earned first-team All-Pro honors as a wide receiver twice with the Chiefs (2018 and 2020). In between those seasons, Hill helped lead Kansas City to its first Super Bowl title in 50 years, as he was one of the stars of the 2019 season, which finished with a win over the San Francisco 49ers in Super Bowl LIV.

In all, Hill earned Pro Bowl selections in all six seasons with the Chiefs and three first-team All-Pro selections as well. He led the Chiefs to two Super Bowl appearances, going 1-1.

He is fifth all-time in Chiefs’ history in receiving yards (6,630) and fourth on the all-time list for receiving touchdowns (56) and total touchdowns (67).

When Did the Chiefs Draft Tyreek Hill?

Hill was a fifth-round selection by the Chiefs in the 2016 NFL Draft, and almost immediately the Chiefs were criticized in many circles for the selection.

Hill had pleaded guilty to domestic assault and battery while at Oklahoma State University in 2014, eventually being kicked off the Cowboys’ team and winding up at West Alabama.

According to an article on NFL.com in 2016, Chiefs head coach Andy Reid talked about the selection of Hill at the team’s rookie minicamp. “I completely understand,” Reid said at the time. “I’m sensitive to the situation. I get it…  A lot of guys don’t try to right the wrong. I give the kid credit for doing that and he’s working hard at that. I completely understand the other side.”
