Ryan Tannehill made a career renaissance of sorts early in his time with the Tennessee Titans, but the veteran quarterback first burst onto the NFL scene as the Miami Dolphins‘ signal-caller.
Tannehill is set to face off with his former team on Monday Night Football in a key clash between the Titans and Dolphins.
Ryan Tannehill’s Time With the Dolphins
Tannehill entered the league with high expectations after being selected eighth overall in the 2012 NFL Draft by Miami. Coming off a standout career at Texas A&M, fans were excited about what he might bring to the franchise.
He was immediately thrust into the starting quarterback job and had an up-and-down rookie campaign, completing just 58.3% of his pass attempts for 3,294 yards, 12 touchdowns, and 13 interceptions as the Dolphins posted a 7-9 record.
The team continued to struggle on its way to 8-8 showings over the next two years despite Tannehill stepping up his contributions.
He bumped up to a 60.4% completion rate in 2013 with 3,913 yards, 24 touchdowns, and 17 interceptions, then went up to 66.4% with 4,045 yards, 27 scores, and 12 picks in 2014.
Tannehill then started all 16 of Miami’s games for a fourth straight year in 2015, completing 61.9% of his pass attempts for 4,208 yards, 24 touchdowns, and 12 picks as the Dolphins again struggled collectively at 6-10.
Things started to trend in the wrong direction over the next two seasons, though.

Tannehill got out to a solid start to the 2016 season, leading Miami to an 8-5 record over the first 13 games of the season as he completed 67.1% of his pass attempts for 2,995 yards, 19 touchdowns and 12 interceptions. An ACL injury sidelined him for the last three regular-season games and the playoff loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers, however.
He then missed all of the 2017 season after re-injuring the same knee during the team’s first non-contact 11-on-11 practice of the season.
Tannehill finally returned in 2018 and got out to a solid start to the season before a shoulder injury forced him to miss five straight games. He returned to finish off the final six games of a bumpy season in which he ultimately totaled 1,979 passing yards, 17 touchdowns, and nine interceptions.
Tannehill was then traded to the Titans prior to the 2019 season in exchange for three late-round draft picks, ending his time with the franchise.
It has since been a mixed bag for the NFL veteran in Tennessee. He was solid in 2019, then broke out for one of the best years of his career in 2020 and had another strong season in 2021. The tide has started to turn the last two years, however, with inconsistent play and nagging injury issues surfacing.
Tannehill will have a chance to show his former team what it’s missing out on Monday in Week 14, though, when he plays against the Dolphins for just the second time in his career and for the first time back in Miami.
He previously led the Titans to a 34-3 win over Miami in Week 17 of the 2021 season, going 13-of-18 for 120 yards and two touchdowns.
Time will tell whether Tannehill can replicate that performance on Monday Night Football as the reeling Titans (4-8) look to help their long odds of making the playoffs with an upset win over the Dolphins (9-3) in Week 14.
