How Could the Dallas Cowboys Utilize Shaquille Leonard To Strengthen the Linebacker Depth?

    Published on

Here's the latest update on the Dallas Cowboys' interest in Shaquille Leonard and how he can help add much-needed depth to the LB room.

The Dallas Cowboys are expected to host linebacker Shaquille Leonard for a visit.

A report by the Dallas Morning News states that the free agent linebacker will visit The Star this week, although the exact date isn’t yet known.

How Could Shaquille Leonard Fit With Cowboys?

On Sunday, head coach Mike McCarthy spoke about Leonard, saying there was interest in the All-Pro linebacker.

After the Cowboys’ win on Thursday against the Commanders, Jerry Jones was asked about Leonard possibly finding a new home with the Cowboys.

The owner said he didn’t know then, adding, “Contact has been made, but I’m sure every team is assuming that if they are in the hunt, they could have an interest in him.”

Jones did mention Leonard’s injury history, saying the team had some questions and would need to check on that aspect first.

“I want to go do our homework and do what we should be doing and see if this thing might fit us. We’ve done no more than that,” said Jones.

Leonard could be a much-needed addition to the Cowboys’ linebacker room that needs extra depth.

The team needs more depth, with DeMarvion Overshown and Leighton Vander Esch out for the season due to injuries.

Leonard could give the room some veteran leadership and be a plug-and-play defender for the team.

The team has Rashaan Evans on the roster now, which adds veteran experience to the young room with Damone Clark and Markquese Bell, but Leonard can add another level of experience instantly.

    Leonard’s Career So Far

Leonard was released by the Colts last week after spending six years with the organization.

He was the Colts’ second-round draft pick out of South Carolina State in 2018. Leonard has been an All-Pro three times and has been to the Pro Bowl four times.

He has 614 combined total tackles, 15 sacks, and 12 interceptions so far in his career.

However, Leonard has an injury history that kept him out for most of the 2022 season due to a setback in his back surgery in the offseason and a concussion he suffered upon his return, landing him on the injured reserve list.
