Hollywood Brown To Sign With the Chiefs: Patrick Mahomes Gets an Explosive New Weapon

With free agency underway, the Chiefs are continuing the madness by signing Hollywood Brown. What does this mean for Kansas City?

The 2024 NFL free agency cycle is still in full swing, and it’s not slowing down. The Kansas City Chiefs are getting involved, bringing in a new weapon for Patrick Mahomes. The Chiefs are signing Marquise “Hollywood’ Brown,” according to Adam Schefter. What are the details?

Why Did the Chiefs Sign Hollywood Brown?

It shouldn’t come as a surprise that the Chiefs were in the receiver market, as they’ve been doing their research the entire process. A big reason is the struggles they saw in 2023, especially when it came to drops.

To make receiver an even bigger need than it already was, the Chiefs released Marquez Valdes-Scantling earlier in the offseason to free up cap space. Without Brown, the Chiefs’ receiving corps consists of Rashee Rice, Justin Watson, Skyy Moore, Kadarius Toney, and Justyn Ross, among a few others.

Signing Brown gives the Chiefs a deep threat they haven’t had since Tyreek Hill left. Rice is the team’s primary yards-after-the-catch (YAC) receiver, with Travis Kelce being the move-the-chains player. Brown, who ran a 4.27 40-yard dash at his college pro day, will be the guy who can take the top off of the defense.

Brown started his career with the Baltimore Ravens after being taken in the first round of the 2019 NFL Draft. He spent three seasons there, with him having his one-and-only 1,000-yard season in his last season with the team.

Afterward, he was traded to the Arizona Cardinals, where he spent the last two seasons.

In his career, Brown has caught 313 passes for 3,644 yards and 28 touchdowns. Most recently, he played 14 games in 2023, catching 51 receptions on 101 targets for 574 yards and four touchdowns. However, he did have a question mark at quarterback for a good portion of the season due to Kyler Murray’s injury.

    Hollywood Brown’s Contract Details

Free agency has been interesting for receivers, with some getting next to nothing and others, like Calvin Ridley, breaking the bank and getting $23 million per year. For Brown, it’s a one-year, prove-it deal. Here’s what we know about the details of the contract:

    • $7 million
    • Up to $4 million in incentives ($11 million total)

The deal gives Brown a chance to have a breakout season in Kansas City with Patrick Mahomes and a chance to win a Super Bowl. Additionally, it allows Brown to cash in big in 2024 if he has the season he hopes for. Essentially, it’s Brown betting on himself going forward.
