Hollywood Brown Injury Update: Chiefs WR Taken to Hospital, May Miss Week 1 With Same Injury Tyreek Hill Suffered in 2019

Marquise "Hollywood" Brown witnessed his Chiefs debut get shortened. Here's the latest on the wide receiver's Saturday injury against the Jaguars.

Marquise “Hollywood” Brown got lured to the Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs to add new speed and explosion to their already dynamic offense.

But his first reception as a member of the Chiefs left many concerned.

What Happened to Hollywood Brown? Details on Injury

The 27-year-old veteran caught a short throw from Patrick Mahomes during their Saturday night preseason debut against the Jacksonville Jaguars. However, he landed awkwardly.

Doctor of Physical Therapy Jeff Mueller began to believe Brown suffered a left AC sprain when he was planted to his side.

The Chiefs later confirmed that Brown sustained a shoulder injury and was ruled questionable to return — though he did not.

After the game, head coach Andy Reid told reporters that Brown was taken to a local hospital with a sternoclavicular joint dislocation — similar to what former Chiefs star receiver Tyreek Hill dealt with in 2019 — and could miss some time as a result.

For reference, Hill missed four games in 2019 due to that injury. The Chiefs begin their regular season in less than four weeks when they take on the Baltimore Ravens in a rematch of the 2023-24 AFC Championship Game on Sept. 5.

Brown caught the 11-yard pass at the KC 41-yard line for the game’s first play. When Brown left, Mahomes and Co. managed to complete the seven-play drive with points on the board as Harrison Butker kicked a 45-yard field goal for the game’s first points.

Update: Brown was discharged from the Jacksonville-area hospital on Saturday night and is cleared to return to Kansas City to join his team.

What Is the Fantasy Fallout from Brown’s Injury?

Brown’s arrival in Kansas City brought high intrigue for members of the Chiefs Kingdom. By adding Brown, the back-to-back Super Bowl champs were landing a past 1,000-yard wide receiver who once ran a 4.27-second time in the 40-yard dash during his NFL Combine workout of 2019.

PFN fantasy analyst Kyle Soppe said Brown’s injury, coupled with a potential suspension for fellow receiver Rashee Rice, means the Chiefs’ WR room is “a story to track up until the second you draft” this year.

Specifically, Soppe thinks Xavier Worthy, Kansas City’s first-round pick this year, will see his stock rise.

“The Chiefs made it clear this offseason that they wanted to challenge defenses downfield, the exact skill set for this burner, and if there’s limited target competition, his usage floor would put him in starting lineups,” Soppe said.

Brown never surpassed 68 catches or 710 total receiving yards in his two seasons with the Cardinals. He also scored no more than four touchdowns.

Furthermore, Brown’s arrival to the Chiefs came with little hope of becoming Mahomes’ new No. 1 target as that title still belongs to tight end Travis Kelce.

Soppe thinks that running back Isiah Pacheco is the Chiefs’ “most stable source of fantasy value.”

“Isiah Pacheco averages 4.7 yards per carry with a catch rate north of 90%. He can do a bit of everything and could well be the driving force behind the scoring in KC all season, but especially through September,” Soppe said. “Draft him with confidence — no matter what the updates are to these receivers.”
