The Chargers have been playing football since 1960 but were absorbed into the NFL in 1970. They have never hoisted the Lombardi Trophy, however.
The Chargers are one of 12 teams to never win a Super Bowl and are one of three to only appear once and lose (Tennessee Titans and Arizona Cardinals).
During their time in the AFL, the Chargers were crowned champions in 1963 after a 51-10 beatdown of the Boston Patriots. They appeared in three other AFL Championship games and have an overall record of 1-3 in AFL Championships.
Have the Chargers Ever Played in a Super Bowl?
During their time in San Diego, the Chargers were crowned AFC champions after the 1994-95 season, earning an appearance in Super Bowl 29. The Chargers fell short, however, losing convincingly to quarterback and Super Bowl MVP Steve Young and the San Francisco 49ers by a score of 49-26.
In the game, Young completed 24 of 36 passes for 325 passing yards, six touchdowns, and zero interceptions. He also added five carries for 49 rushing yards
Since returning to Los Angeles in 2017, the Chargers have yet to appear in a Super Bowl. They have made the playoffs twice but own a 0-2 record in the postseason since that time.
The Chargers are one of eight teams to play in a Super Bowl but never win a championship. The other seven are the Buffalo Bills, Minnesota Vikings, Atlanta Falcons, Carolina Panthers, Cincinnati Bengals, Arizona Cardinals, and Tennessee Titans.
Four other teams — Detroit Lions, Cleveland Browns, Houston Texans, and Jacksonville Jaguars — have never played in a Super Bowl.
Having returned to the playoffs this season, looking lethal as ever, Los Angeles will be looking to bring a Lombardi Trophy home to its loyal fans.
