The Buffalo Bills of the 1980s were the Bridesmaids of the National Football League. They were AFC Champions four years in a row, only to lose the Super Bowl every year. They have not been back since. Accordingly, the Bills have never tasted a Super Bowl victory, nor has their quarterback, Josh Allen.
Josh Allen Has Never Won a Super Bowl or an AFC Title
Allen has directed the Bills to a 13-4 record this season and the No. 2 seed in the AFC. They have won their division for the fifth year in a row. However, the Bills and Allen have never won a Super Bowl. They are trying to change history this postseason.
Allen has been to the postseason every year since he was drafted with the exception of his rookie season. He has won five playoff games against five losses.
Allen has 10 playoff games on his resume. In 2019, he made his postseason debut with a loss to the Houston Texans in the Wild Card round.
The Bills made a giant leap in 2020 with Allen, as they defeated Indianapolis and Baltimore to advance to Allen’s first AFC Championship game against the Kansas City Chiefs. The Cinderella story came to an end as the Chiefs defeated the Bills 38-24 in the AFC Championship game.
If only the Chiefs could move to the NFC, the Bills might make a Super Bowl. The Chiefs have terminated the Bills’ postseason three of the last four seasons. It has always come down to Allen vs. Patrick Mahomes. Mahomes always wins in the postseason, which is why Mahomes has three rings and Allen has none.
Mahomes and Allen have gone head-to-head on three different occasions in the playoffs. Statistically, they are very similar in nature, but when it comes to getting the ring, Mahomes always comes out on top. He is 3-0 against Allen and appears to be Allen’s kryptonite standing in the way of his getting to the big dance.
Allen has a quote he is using this postseason. As he told Athlon Sports, he is using an old adage from a college coach to refer to not changing anything from the regular season to the playoffs.
“Continue with the preparation that we’ve had all year,” Allen said to Athlon Sports. “I think it’s a quote that my college coach had, it was, ‘You dance with who brung you.’ We’re not going to try to change anything, don’t have to do more or less, just trying to continue doing what we’re doing and make sure that we’re executing at a high level.”
If you eliminate the 0-3 record against Mahomes and the Chiefs, Allen is 5-2 in the playoffs, which is respectable. The question is whether this is the year they should face one another, that Allen gets to try on the glass slipper and go to the ball.
