Quarterback Jared Goff has the Detroit Lions on a run in 2023. He has now played eight seasons in the NFL after being drafted No. 1 overall by the Los Angeles Rams in 2016 and is once again in the playoffs.
Goff has been able to use his experience in big games to elevate the Lions into one of the top teams in the NFC, but has he ever won a Super Bowl, and how did he fare?
Jared Goff’s Super Bowl Appearance
Goff has never won a Super Bowl. However, he was the Rams’ starting QB when they lost to the New England Patriots 13-3 in Super Bowl LIII.
That was Goff’s solo appearance in the showpiece game, and it resulted in the lowest-scoring Super Bowl in NFL history. Goff completed 19 of his 38 pass attempts (50%) for 229 yards and one interception.
The Rams’ offense never kicked into gear, and Goff was a big reason why. He had one of the worst performances of his career that night, and it’s something he never recovered from.
Goff described that loss after the game by saying, “Toughest loss I’ve ever had. It kills. It’s terrible.”
In January 2021, Goff was traded to the Lions as part of the Rams’ blockbuster trade for Matthew Stafford. Goff had been labeled a system QB who could never be more than average, and with the Rams feeling they were close, he was sent packing to Detroit.
One reason that Los Angeles looked elsewhere was Goff’s inability to elevate the offense in big games. He had stumbled and underperformed when the Rams needed him most, so they went looking for a quarterback who head coach Sean McVay felt could win them a Lombardi Trophy.
Cast aside by the Rams, Goff has had to rebuild his reputation in Detroit. That coincided with the rebuild of the Lions’ franchise, and the QB has ended up being a big reason for the rejuvenation under HC Dan Campbell.
In 2023, Detroit has been one of the best teams in the NFC. Goff helped lead the Lions to their first playoff win since 1992. Coincidentally, it was over the Rams in a revenge game that ended 24-23.
Despite the challenges he’s faced in Detroit, Goff has received high praise from his head coach and teammates. “It’s easy when everything’s going right, you’re winning games, guys around, they all love it, want to be a part of it. But when you’re 0-10-1, you find out about people,” Campbell said about Goff’s attitude.
Cambell continued hyping up Goff, who has been able to take the Lions from one of the worst teams in the NFC to one of the best. “You find out about players and coaches, people in the organization,” Campbell said about the early winless years.

“That’s a much better viewpoint and look at people than when everything’s going great, and you’ve got 12 wins. I know exactly what Goff is when it’s at its worst, and I’ll take that guy any day.”
