Has An NFL Team Ever Won 3 Straight Super Bowls? Chiefs Chasing Historic 3-Peat

    Published on

The NFL season is kicking off and the Chiefs are officially beginning their attempt to win three Super Bowls in a row. Has any team ever done that before?

The Kansas City Chiefs kick off the 2024 NFL regular season by hosting the Baltimore Ravens in the first game.

Coming off their second consecutive Super Bowl win and third in five years, the Chiefs are looking to three-peat and win three Super Bowls in a row.

Winning three Super Bowls in a row is very difficult. Has a team ever done it before, or would the Chiefs become the first in history if they pull it off?

Are Chiefs Chasing History With 3 Super Bowls in a Row?

Since the Super Bowl became a thing in 1967, only eight teams have managed to win it in consecutive years: the Kansas City Chiefs (2023-2024), New England Patriots (2003-2004), Denver Broncos (1997-1998), Dallas Cowboys (1992-1993), San Francisco 49ers (1988-1989), Pittsburgh Steelers (1978-1979 and 1974-1975), Miami Dolphins (1972-1973), and Green Bay Packers (1966-1967).

However, despite the many instances of back-to-back winners, no franchise has ever won three Super Bowls in a row. If the Chiefs were to do it in 2024, they would be making history.

The Packers were the first team to ever win two Super Bowls in a row as they not only won the inaugural Super Bowl, but they won their second the very next year. The Packers took down the Chiefs and Raiders to do so. While there were only 16 teams in the NFL at the time, it’s still an impressive feat.

Just a handful of years later, the Dolphins, who, on the heels of the only undefeated season in NFL history, won their second Super Bowl the very next year. However, even with the winningest coach in NFL history, Don Shula, at the helm, the Dolphins couldn’t get it done with a third consecutive title.

Immediately after the Dolphins won back-to-back rings, the Steelers did the same. And just a few years after doing it in ’74 and ’75, they did it again in ’78 and ’79.

The Steelers are tied with the New England Patriots for the most Super Bowl titles in NFL history, and their dominance during the 1970s is a big reason why.

The 49ers did it in the late 1980s, as Jerry Rice and Joe Montana led the team to two years of dominance. Even with legends like that, the 49ers still couldn’t win three in a row.

After the 49ers came the Cowboys, who dominated the 1990s, and they won back-to-back rings in 1992 and 1993.

The Broncos also got their own back-to-back titles in the late ’90s.

And before the Chiefs, the last team to win back-to-back Super Bowls was 20 years ago when the Patriots did so in 2003 and 2004.

The Patriots were dominant for 20 years under Tom Brady and Bill Belichick but could never get a three-peat done. Will the Chiefs find a way this year?
