When Does Hard Knocks Start? 2023 Premiere Date, Potential Teams, Start Times, and More

Hard Knocks returns to HBO in 2023. When will the show premiere, and which of the eligible teams -- including Aaron Rodgers' Jets -- will be chosen to appear?

NFL training camp is approaching, which means the debut of HBO’s Hard Knocks isn’t far behind. First broadcast in 2001, Hard Knocks is a docuseries that chronicles the behind-the-scenes events of an NFL training camp. Fans are given an inside look at how clubs make personnel decisions, manage the locker room, and coordinate a roster.

Here is everything you need to know about the 2023 version of Hard Knocks.

    Hard Knocks Premiere Date

    • Date: Tuesday, Aug. 8
    • Time: 10 p.m. ET
    • Channel: HBO
    • Streaming Options: Max

How To Watch Hard Knocks on HBO

Subscribers to Max are able to stream Hard Knocks to any mobile device or smart TV where the Max app can be downloaded. Traditional cable TV watchers will need an HBO subscription in order to watch the series, as HBO will need to be a part of their existing cable package.

Which Team Will Be Featured on Hard Knocks in 2023?

The New York Jets have been chosen to appear on Hard Knocks this season. Gang Green was selected even though head coach Robert Saleh indicated his team didn’t want to be involved.

The NFL can force a team to appear on Hard Knocks if they don’t meet specific criteria. A club can decline to appear on the show if any of the following apply:

    • They have a first-year head coach in place.
    • They’ve had a playoff berth in the past two seasons.
    • They’ve appeared on Hard Knocks in the past 10 years.

In 2023, four teams did not meet any of the above criteria and could have been required to participate in Hard Knocks:

The NFL reached out to the Lions — the focus of the 2022 series — and asked if they wanted to participate for a second consecutive season, according to the Detroit News. However, the Lions indicated they were not interested in a repeat appearance.

How Many Episodes Is Hard Knocks?

As usual, Hard Knocks will include five episodes. The series typically attempts to mirror the preseason schedule and provide fans with insight into the decision-making process that occurs as the regular season draws near. The in-season version of Hard Knocks will typically include eight or nine episodes.

When Does Hard Knocks Air Each Week?

Hard Knocks will air in August on Tuesday evenings at 10 p.m. ET. With preseason games being played Thursday-Sunday in August, a Tuesday airing gives the NFL an additional day of content.
