On March 28, 2022, the Detroit Lions were announced as the next team that will feature in the HBO Hard Knocks series. This will be the Lions’ first time appearing on the series and will feature a number of storylines as the team looks to continue rebuilding their franchise. With head coach Dan Campbell at the helm, there should be no shortage of interesting and quotable moments during the show this year.
Hard Knocks 2022 | Detroit Lions to star for the first time
While this will be the 17th edition of Hard Knocks, it will be the first time the Lions have featured. The season will begin on August 9, 2022, and run for five episodes across the Lions’ training camp. The season finale will air on September 6, just ahead of the start of the 2022 NFL season.
“We are excited about the opportunity to showcase the City of Detroit and the amazing culture we are building at the Lions,” said Detroit Lions Team President and CEO, Rod Wood. “HBO Sports and NFL Films are the best of the best and we know they will be excellent partners in sharing our story with football fans around the world.”
A 30-person NFL Films crew will be at the Lions’ training camp in Allen Park. They will shoot over 1,000 hours of footage across the series as the crews have access to players, both within and outside of the Lions facilities.
The Lions are a fascinating team in 2022
The Lions are in a fascinating spot as a franchise. They finished the 2021 NFL season 3-13-1, but their performances towards the end of the season earned them a lot of respect. This will be the second offseason for the Lions without long-term franchise QB Matthew Stafford. The Lions traded him away in a deal that netted them Jared Goff and a lot of draft capital in return.
However, with Goff not having proven he is the answer under center in Detroit, there is plenty of intrigue around the future of the position. Add all of that to a team with two first-round selections in the 2022 NFL Draft, and there should be plenty to keep an eye on.
