Giants Veteran Fires Back at ESPN Analysts for Mocking New York as Landing Spot for Matthew Stafford

With ESPN dismissing the New York Giants as a destination for Matthew Stafford, one veteran on the team didn't take kindly to their critique.

The Matthew Stafford sweepstakes, while not officially underway, feel like they have gotten off the ground. Multiple teams, including the Las Vegas Raiders, seem to be making their best pitch to bring the Super Bowl-winning quarterback to their organization.

Among the list of possible destinations, the New York Giants have found themselves as a legitimate option.

However, according to one NFL analyst, Stafford going to the woeful Giants this late in his career makes no sense. Sharing his disapproval, he was vehemently against the move, much to the chagrin of veteran Jermaine Eluemunor.

Giants Veteran Fires Back at New York Giants Disrespect for Matthew Stafford

Mike Greenberg is one of the most recognizable names when it comes to NFL media. The veteran analyst has been in circles for a long time and currently hosts Get Up on ESPN. He, alongside Damien Woody, didn’t seem too keen on Stafford playing for Big Blue.

While their overall record, 3-14 last season, was atrocious, their recent history doesn’t suggest a major change is coming. In the past decade, the team has made the playoffs just two times, far from ideal for a 37-year-old.

Greenberg went first, “Matt Stafford can’t seriously want to go to the Giants. I don’t mean this as disrespectfully as that sounds, but I mean – a wind tunnel behind a terrible offensive line on a team just awful last year, where the coach and the general manager’s neck are basically hanging by a thread.”

But, Eluemunor took exception to Greenberg’s comments about his team’s offensive line. “‘Behind Terrible Offensive Line’ I’m not one to make excuses but before AT went down we were dogging some of the best DLs in the league, go watch the tape,” wrote the eight-year veteran.

He continued, “@Espngreeny We can sit down and watch the tape together my guy. Don’t care who it is back there in 25 but whoever it is will be Greatly Protected.” However, during the year, the team finished 27th on PFSN’s OL+ metric as well, far from ideal for a team trying to host a pocket passer like Stafford.

Of course, injuries could have played a major part in it, as Eluemunor suggested. But that wasn’t the only issue the Get Up room saw with Stafford making his way to NYC. Damien Woody added, “No way I would want to play for the New York Football Giants. [They] are a disaster.”

He wasn’t pulling any punches, bringing the team’s history from the past offseason. “We’ve seen what happened this year with Saquon Barkley. They moving on from Saquon Barkley, he going on to win the Super Bowl, the disaster that was Daniel Jones.”

Of course, he wasn’t a fan of their personnel either. “They can’t protect the QB, and the front office and the coach are barely hanging on as it is. So, if you’re Matt Stafford, what happens if things don’t roll your way? Then that whole regime could be out.”

Already, multiple suitors are lining up to pry Stafford away from Los Angeles. But with his reported demand of a $50 million contract, not many teams can chuck up that kind of money. It will be fascinating to see how the eventual transaction plays out.
