Giants GM Joe Schoen Reveals New York’s Plan To Address the QB Position This Offseason

Giants general manager Joe Schoen revealed his plan to find a new quarterback for his team during the 2025 NFL offseason.

The New York Giants had a dreadful 2024 season. After entering the season with hopes of turning things around despite missing the playoffs in 2023, things did not pan out. Daniel Jones was released by the Giants as the team cratered to a 3-14 finish.

There are a number of questions surrounding this team entering the offseason. New York answered the more immediate questions before the playoffs began. General manager Joe Schoen and head coach Brian Daboll remain in their positions for the 2025 season despite only three wins last year.

As a result, it is up to Schoen to upgrade the team’s roster this spring, and there remains one important question he must answer (and soon): who will be the starting quarterback for the Giants when the 2025 NFL season kicks off?

Giants GM Joe Schoen Details Plan to Upgrade QB Position

Schoen spoke to the media ahead of the 2025 NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis. The Giants general manager was inevitably asked about the quarterback position.

He made mention of Tommy DeVito, the team’s only quarterback at this time, while also mentioning that he wants to add a young player as well as a veteran to the room. New York has the No. 3 overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft, so there’s a chance that the top QB prospects, Shedeur Sanders and Cam Ward, will be gone by the time they’re on the clock.

“We don’t know what’s going to happen in the draft. We don’t know who’s going to be there,” Schoen said. “When we get around these kids, they may or may not be a fit for us. We’re going to have to address the position somewhere.

“Even if you get a young quarterback, you’d like to have a vet in the room with them to show them the ropes and how to be a pro. We’re looking at all different avenues.”

The two teams ahead of New York in the 2025 NFL Draft are the Tennessee Titans and Cleveland Browns, and both teams could select a signal-caller of their own. However, it’s possible neither team will take a quarterback since they have so many other needs.

This was the case in PFSN’s latest 2025 NFL mock draft. The Titans selected Penn State edge rusher Abdul Carter with the first overall pick. After that, the Browns went with two-way star Travis Hunter out of Colorado. With the third overall pick, the Giants got their quarterback in Ward.

“The Washington State transfer flirted with the NFL Draft last year before returning to college football with Miami. It’s a move that paid off for Ward, who looks likely to be drafted in the first 10 picks,” wrote PFSN’s Owain Jones.

“A creative force with incredible playmaking skills and instincts, the Hurricanes quarterback has had some issues with ball security but brings the artistic flair seen in modern passers.”

If the Giants can’t land Sanders or Ward, it’s possible they could target a quarterback later in the draft such as Ole Miss QB Jaxson Dart. Earlier this week, PFSN’s Justin Lewis outlined a scenario where New York trades up from their second-round pick to take Dart at No. 31.

“In a weak quarterback class, there is potential for Jaxson Dart to go even higher. The Giants appear to have strong interest in Dart as they have looked for stability at the position since another Ole Miss quarterback led them to two Super Bowl victories. Eli Manning remains involved with the Giants since his retirement and is a fan of the Rebel senior.

“Dart had a prolific college career, breaking most of Manning’s passing records at Ole Miss. His bowl game performance and time at the Senior Bowl have caused him to shoot up some draft boards. His deep-ball touch is one of the best in this class, while his grit and athleticism make him a polarizing prospect.”

Schoen said he wants the Giants to add a veteran as well as a prospect, so who are the top free agents available at the position? According to PFSN’s Top Free Agents By Position, the best quarterbacks on the market are:

The Giants have a few different avenues they can go down to add a new quarterback, and it appears as if Schoen and his staff will leave no stone unturned.

This will certainly be an intriguing storyline to follow throughout free agency and during the 2025 NFL Draft.
