Former Denver Broncos starting quarterback Russell Wilson’s time as a free agent is off and running. With the Broncos on the hook for the majority of his salary as a result of the early release, those around the NFL have quietly spoken about how enticing of an option adding Wilson to a team needing a quarterback could be.
With a report coming out early Friday morning that Wilson was spotted in the airport on his way to Pittsburgh to meet with the Steelers, it’s now being reported that he may have stopped by elsewhere before doing so as well.
Russell Wilson Has ‘Exploratory Meeting’ With Giants
According to ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter, in addition to Wilson’s plan to meet with the Steelers’ brass, Wilson also stopped by New Jersey to meet with the New York Giants as well.
According to Schefter, “Before traveling to Pittsburgh today, Russell Wilson stopped in New Jersey for what one source described as ‘an exploratory meeting’ with the Giants, per league sources. Wilson is in Pittsburgh today to meet with the Steelers, per sources.”
Wilson is expected to meet with a few teams as free agency is set to kick off in under a week, but a meeting between the veteran QB and the Giants is an interesting situation considering New York’s current QB situation.
This meeting is unfolding merely a few days after a league-wide rumor was shared by Rich Eisen stating the team has “buyer’s remorse” when it comes to starting QB Daniel Jones.
Despite Jones signing a contract a year ago for four years and $160 million, Wilson’s contract situation and how unique it is may not deter the team from adding another starting-level piece if they see fit.
Due to the Broncos releasing Wilson when they did, they’ll be on the hook for his remaining salary, meaning he will still get paid by Denver regardless of the team he plays for in 2024. That sets up a situation where a team like the Giants, or any other team, can sign Wilson for the veteran minimum.

This type of flexibility is rare at the QB position and is something the Giants are exploring with their quick “exploratory” meeting with Wilson.
Just what happens with Jones and his future with the Giants after just playing six games last season remains to be seen, but New York’s meeting with Wilson at least shows that all options very well could be on the table for the G-Men in 2024.
