Kyle Shanahan Stresses 49ers To Forget Super Bowl Losses to Chiefs

There’s no shame in accepting when you’ve been bested twice. While Kyle Shanahan knows this, he urges the 49ers to put their past heartbreaks behind them as they prepare for a rematch against the Chiefs.

With two Super Bowl losses to Patrick Mahomes and Andy Reid, the 49ers are focused on moving forward.

“I think everyone understands that we’ve lost two Super Bowls to them,” Shanahan said. “But you’ve got to make sure you don’t get caught up in that. This game has nothing to do with past games.”

Despite the emotional weight of those losses, Shanahan’s message is clear: focus on the present. After reviewing the film of Kansas City’s season, Shanahan believes the Chiefs’ defense has only improved from their already elite 2022 form.

“I thought last year was the best defense we played all year, and I feel that way this year so far,” he admitted.

The Chiefs’ defense ranks in the top 10, allowing just 17 points per game, but it’s Mahomes and Reid who continue to be the 49ers’ biggest obstacles. Shanahan acknowledged Mahomes’s challenge, saying, “You’ve always got to be ready for new plays.”
