Deion Sanders was ecstatic on Saturday as the Colorado Buffaloes posted a thrilling 41-27 victory over the Texas Tech Red Raiders. The former Dallas Cowboys superstar couldn’t be more proud as the Buffs battled back from an early 13-0 deficit in Lubbock.
Prime Leaves Lubbock With a Different Perspective
The atmosphere at Texas Tech was intense, with fans throwing tortillas and other objects onto the field. Taking it in stride, Sanders joked: “They threw everything but my mama at me.”

While he appreciated the fans’ enthusiasm, he noted that some items, like water bottles, crossed a line. Texas Tech’s head coach, Joey McGuire, even took the mic to apologize for the crowd’s actions, a gesture Sanders respected.
The Buffaloes’ latest victory inched closer to a Big 12 Conference Championship spot and kept their College Football Playoff dreams alive. While Sanders didn’t like the crowd’s reaction, he gave credit to his team’s grit for keeping them safe.
“First of all, I thank the Lord for keeping us safe,” Sanders began. He further appreciated saying, “I’m proud of them because they never give up, and I don’t flinch because I know who they are.”
The Colorado Buffaloes are now chasing a championship, and Sanders’ leadership and his team’s fierce determination have put them on a path to greatness.
Deion Sanders Has High Regard for Coach Joey McGuire
Sanders had nothing but respect for Texas Tech’s head coach, Joey McGuire, even though Colorado fans might not always be met with the same sentiment on the field. Following the Buffs’ win over Texas Tech, Sanders praised McGuire’s professionalism, especially in handling the enraged crowd at Jones AT&T Stadium.
When fans began throwing more than just the traditional tortillas — like water bottles and other objects — onto the field, McGuire took the microphone, urging them to keep it respectful. After the game, Sanders reflected on McGuire’s actions via Lubbock Avalanche-Journal, sharing, “He handled it professionally and that’s indicative of who he is.”
This admiration goes back years as McGuire once coached Deion’s eldest son, Bucky, at Cedar Hill, where he earned Sanders’ high regard as a father and coach.
“Joey is pure class,” Sanders added. “Back in high school in Texas at Cedar Hill, he was him. Everybody wants their kid to have the opportunity to play with Joey… He’s one of my favorites.”
At his press conference today, Deion Sanders praised his good friend Joey McGuire.
