Former NFL QB Sees Cam Ward Taking the No. 1 Spot Despite Hype Around Shedeur Sanders

Since the end of the 2024 college football regular season, much of the focus of fans has been on the 2025 NFL Draft. With many high-profile players set to enter the draft, there is a lot of excitement as fans wait for April.

Notably, there has been a big debate around the top two quarterbacks in the draft, Colorado’s Shedeur Sanders and Miami’s Cam Ward. They are viewed as the top two options at quarterback, but there is no consensus as to which player is better.

Former NFL Quarterback Kurt Benkert Says Cam Ward Deserves To Be the First Overall Pick

Former NFL quarterback Kurt Benkert gave his opinion on Ward and Sanders. He talked about everything Ward does right and said he thinks he should be the first overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft.

“I just broke down Cam Ward’s tape. He’s my early #1 overall pick. He can make every throw on the field with ease, from multiple arm angles, and with multiple trajectories to the same spots. Not to mention, he’s extremely polished in terms of timing his throws and his accuracy is out of this world.”

“Truthfully, I haven’t seen many other quarterbacks coming out that seem to be able to teleport the ball to the exact spot they want to go to as consistently as he does. Add to this, his poise in the pocket and overall awareness + his stature being able to shrug off tackles… he’s special. Whoever decides to draft him is going to get a franchise turnaround player.”

Ward certainly had an excellent 2024 season. In his first season in Miami after transferring from Washington State, he finished as a finalist for the Heisman Trophy. He completed 305 of 454 passing attempts for 4,313 yards and 39 TDs.

If the Tennessee Titans agree with Kurt Benkert, they will have the opportunity to draft Ward with the first overall pick. If the Titans pass on him, there is a chance that the Cleveland Browns or New York Giants at second and third overall could draft him.

It is unclear if the Browns are interested in drafting a quarterback. They still have Deshaun Watson under contract, but the Browns appear to be interested in a QB contingency plan.

The Giants are definitely interested in drafting a quarterback and have indicated as such. There is a strong possibility the Giants will get whichever quarterback between Ward and Sanders who is not drafted by the Titans, unless the Browns avoid targeting a veteran signal-caller in free agency and instead utilize the draft to bolster their QB room.
