Former NFL QB Names 2 Possible Quarterback Options for Cowboys After Cooper Rush’s Exit

The Dallas Cowboys are looking to make moves at the quarterback position in this year’s NFL Draft. With the departure of Cooper Rush, they are looking to find a backup for Dak Prescott, and a former NFL QB has two draft targets for the Cowboys to look at this April.

Former NFL QB Chase Daniel Links Cowboys With 2 QBs in 2025 NFL Draft

Cowboys’ COO Stephon Jones recently voiced his opinion on the Cowboys backup quarterback situation:

“We will evaluate the whole situation,” Jones said. “You’re always wanting to have a young guy coming, that’s always a preference, and certainly that’s something we’ll look at in the draft is to see if there’s a young guy to start bringing along.”

“Obviously, we were focused on Trey [Lance] there when we traded for him and he was our young guy, if you will, that we were bringing along. But all of those are things that we will start to evaluate with this draft, Coach [Brian] Schottenheimer, [QBs coach Steve] Shimko, and [offensive coordinator] Clayton [Adams] and that group, what’s available out there, what’s going to be in the draft and make the best decision in terms of what we’re going to have behind Dak.”

This is not the first time the Cowboys’ executive has mentioned this desire from the front office; in February, he talked about how the move for Lance was a play around the rising cost of signal callers.

“You know, I think one of our goals is to get a young quarterback in the draft,” Jones told The Dallas Morning News. “I don’t know where that’s going to be. That’s why we gave a [fourth-round pick] for Trey. It seems like all the quarterbacks, even guys we have in the fourth round, go in the first. They always go so much higher than what you think.”

The Cowboys seem likely to draft at least one quarterback in this year’s draft. Former NFL quarterback Chase Daniel responded to Jones’ comments, writing on X, “Kyle McCord or Jalen Milroe in Dallas makes alot of sense.”

Jalen Milroe or Kyle McCord to Dallas? Who Makes the Most Sense?

If the Cowboys draft either McCord or Milroe, both offer different strengths and weaknesses.

Milroe is a freakish athlete, and PFSN NFL Draft analyst Jacob Infante described him as having a “first round skillset with a fifth round tape” in the Alabama QB’s scouting report.

Milroe has shown glimpses of elite accuracy, which gives him an extremely high ceiling given how gifted he is as a ball-carrier. His breakaway speed and arm strength could pair nicely with Dallas’ playmakers like Ceedee Lamb. However, his lack of consistent accuracy on his deep ball, along with his often shaky mechanics and turnover issues, are cause for concern.

McCord on the other hand is a potentially safer option for Dallas. His strengths lie in accuracy and reading progressions, and his ability to move an offense was seen in full display in his final year at Syracuse.

The weaknesses on McCord’s scouting report come from his lack of elite arm strength. While he excels in the short to mid range passing attack, his deep ball could limit an NFL offense with him under center. Consequently, his lack of arm strength makes him very dependent on being in a stable pocket; however, Dallas has always boasted a sound offensive line.

While both McCord and Milroe have decent upside at the next level, Milroe’s ceiling is arguably greater than McCord’s, though potentially at the cost of a solid floor. Dallas will have to monitor Lance’s market as a free agent, though they may be in line to make a move in the NFL Draft instead.
