Former Cowboys WR Makes Case for Deion Sanders Amid Dallas’ Head Coaching Rumors

Former Dallas Cowboys wide receiver Dez Bryant took to social media to support Deion Sanders for the vacant head coaching job.

Former Dallas Cowboys wide receiver Dez Bryant has made clear that he wants to see Deion Sanders become the next head coach of “America’s Team.” On Monday, it was reported and later confirmed by Sanders himself that he and Cowboys owner Jerry Jones had a phone call to discuss the possibility of Prime Time becoming Dallas’ coach.

The departure of head coach Mike McCarthy means that the Cowboys are actively looking for a head coach. As Jones noted in a press release regarding McCarthy, the coaching search will begin immediately. With free agency and the NFL Draft right around the corner, Dallas will want to ensure its head coach is confirmed as soon as possible.

What Did Dez Bryant Say About Deion Sanders, Dallas Cowboys Rumors?

Bryant wasted no time sharing his preference for the job, joining the masses in rooting for Coach Prime to come home.

“I hope @DeionSanders get the cowboys coaching Job!,” he posted.

Bryant was drafted by Dallas with the 24th pick in the 2010 NFL Draft and played the first eight seasons of his career with a star on his helmet. He crossed 1,000 receiving yards and double-digit touchdown receptions in three consecutive years (2012, 2013, 2014).

Does Sanders to the Cowboys Make Sense for Both Parties?

Coach Prime becoming the newest coach of the Cowboys does make sense for both parties involved.

First and foremost, Sanders played for Dallas (under Jones) during his playing career. There’s also plenty of talent to work with. Quarterback Dak Prescott, receiver CeeDee Lamb, and edge rusher Micah Parsons are elite talents who will make any coach’s job easier. While the Cowboys ranked 22nd by PFN’s Offense+ metric and 26th on the other side of the ball, that’s more of an indictment of the team’s health than its talent.

Sanders may want heavy personnel control, which could concern the front office, and Dallas would also have to pay his buyout. Jones’ past suggests that makes a Sanders reunion less likely.

However, Sanders could be the missing piece for a team that has consistently fallen short of expectations. In 2023, the Cowboys had a phenomenal regular season and were a heavy favorite heading into a home playoff game against the Green Bay Packers. They were dominated, 48-32, and couldn’t get much of anything going in 2024.

There are obstacles in the way, but if both sides want a hire to happen badly enough, Coach Prime could be chosen to bring a championship back to Dallas.
