Fantasy TE Start/Sit: How Should You Handle Sam LaPorta and Chigoziem Okonkwo?

    Published on

Looking ahead to Week 15, which TEs should be in line to start for fantasy football managers, and who should be considered as a sit?

The TE position can often be overlooked in the world of fantasy football, but any miss in your starting lineup in the fantasy playoffs can be the mistake that ends your season. Here are some of my early start/sit options that can help guide you as you look to set your starting lineup in Week 15.

Which TE Should You Start in Fantasy This Week?

Sam LaPorta, Detroit Lions (vs. DEN)

Rookie TE Sam LaPorta had one of the worst — if not the worst — games of his young career, with just two receptions for 23 yards against the Chicago Bears’ underrated defense on Sunday.

If you are worried, allow me to put your mind at ease by telling you that you can still trust the young TE in your fantasy lineup heading into the fantasy playoffs.

In his six games at Ford Field, LaPorta has averaged five receptions for 52 yards and has scored five times when the Lions play at home this season.

Taysom Hill, New Orleans Saints (vs. NYG)

You’ll need to keep an eye on the New Orleans Saints’ injury report while TE Taysom Hill continues to deal with a foot injury, but if he can return to the field against the New York Giants, Hill is definitely a viable starting option at TE in Week 15.

Over his last seven games, Hill has registered five double-digit fantasy performances with his Swiss Army knife versatility in this Saints offense. His rushing output has been his biggest fantasy ally, with four games this year with 50+ yards rushing.

If the Saints can get out in front of the Giants in the first half on the scoreboard, Hill could see plenty of work as a runner in Week 15.

Which TE Should You Sit in Fantasy This Week?

Chigoziem Okonkwo, Tennessee Titans (vs. HOU)

It hasn’t been all that exciting, but Tennessee Titans TE Chigoziem Okonkwo has quietly put together his two best fantasy performances of the 2023 season heading into their matchup with the Miami Dolphins on Monday Night Football.

His seven receptions for 107 yards over that time frame are certainly encouraging for his dynasty outlook, but his fantasy ceiling doesn’t feel high enough to justify the risk of his fantasy floor in this Titans’ passing game. Start him at your own risk.

Should You Start LaPorta or Dallas Goedert?

Philadelphia Eagles TE Dallas Goedert appeared to have no limitations after returning to the starting lineup in Week 14 against the Dallas Cowboys, which was evidenced by the fact he was on the field for 84% of the offensive snaps on Sunday.

His production though was a bit underwhelming, with just four receptions for 30 yards with no scores. While LaPorta’s fantasy dud was unfortunate, it was only the sixth time he has finished with fewer than 10 fantasy points this season.

In comparison, Goedert has eight games with fewer than 10 fantasy points this season … while playing three fewer games.

The Eagles TE definitely has a high ceiling, but LaPorta has just as much upside in your lineup and comes with lower risk of producing a fantasy dud this season. Roll with LaPorta in Week 15.

Should You Start Okonkwo or Cade Otton?

If you were brave enough to start Tampa Bay Buccaneers TE Cade Otton the week after he failed to see a single target against the Carolina Panthers, then you were rewarded with a late fourth-quarter touchdown in Week 14.

While both players have a fairly low fantasy floor this season, we have a top-10 fantasy finish or two from Otton this year, while Okonkwo still hasn’t produced a single game with 10 or more fantasy points in 2023. If I have to stream one of these two options, I’d rather roll the dice with Otton in Week 15.
