Who Are the Best Kickers To Draft in Fantasy?
Justin Tucker, Baltimore Ravens
Isn’t it cool to realize when you’re watching the greatest player of all time at his position while his career is still going on? Long before Patrick Mahomes revealed himself to be the greatest quarterback of all time, we’ve had Justin Tucker.
The Baltimore Ravens kicker was not the No. 1 kicker in fantasy last year, though. But he was the year before.
Maybe Tucker, at age 35, is losing it a bit. He only made one kick from 50+ last season. However, I’m choosing to chalk that up to random chance. The year before, Tucker went 9-for-14 from 50+.
The real story there is the lack of attempts. The Ravens are an aggressive fourth-down team, which limits Tucker’s attempts. Last season, Tucker attempted 52 extra points (making 51). If just a few of those were field goals instead, we’re talking about fantasy’s No. 1 kicker.
Tucker is still as reliable as it gets. He’s the best kicker of all time playing on an elite offense that scores a lot of points. I never advocate paying up for a kicker, but someone has to take one first. That player should be Tucker.
Brandon Aubrey, Dallas Cowboys
Brandon Aubrey’s story might be one of my favorites of all time. No, not because I’m a Dallas Cowboys fan. Rather, because I like fun.
A former soccer player who wasn’t good enough to make it, Aubrey was watching football like any other dude. His wife literally said to him, “You could do that.” And he agreed.
So, Aubrey trained for four years with a kicking coach and learned how to apply his soccer skills to kicking a football. In 2022 and 2023, he kicked in the USFL for the Birmingham Stallions. His performance got him noticed by NFL teams, and the Cowboys signed him after the 2023 USFL season was complete.
All Aubrey did in his first NFL season at age 28 was lead all kickers in fantasy points per game (ppg) … by a lot. His 10.4 ppg was 1.1 ppg ahead of the next kicker.
Aubrey went 36-for-38 from the field and did not miss any of his 10 kicks from 50+. He did miss three extra points, which, while annoying, doesn’t really move the needle on his fantasy value.
Playing on one of the best offenses in football with a coach who sometimes isn’t as aggressive as he should be on fourth down, Aubrey has plenty of opportunities to score fantasy points. If you wanted to take him over Tucker, I wouldn’t object.
