With the loss in the AFC Championship Game, Josh Allen is now 0-4 against Patrick Mahomes in the playoffs. The Buffalo Bills suffered a devastating 32-29 loss against the Kansas City Chiefs and are now left with many questions about their team.
The Bills have tried everything to get past the Chiefs, yet they haven’t been able to. Allen has been great in every game, but still, Mahomes is always able to get the job done. Based on it, Robert Griffin III said that the Bills quarterback has become to Mahomes what Philip Rivers was to Tom Brady.
Robert Griffin III Breaks Down Problems for Josh Allen, Bills
In a recent segment on “Up & Adams,” Griffin discussed how the Bills have tried to copy the Chiefs to have similar success, but unfortunately, even that has not worked out.
He mentioned that the Bills might not ever beat the Chiefs in the postseason and may have to rely on the Cincinnati Bengals (the only AFC team to beat Mahomes in the postseason) to get the job done against Mahomes.
“I’m just saying in their [Bills] mind, mentally, now, they’re feeling like, ‘How do we beat this guy?'” Griffin said. “We even tried to copy their formula, play better defense, get turnovers … because the Chiefs have been one of the best running teams in the playoffs during their Super Bowl runs. … But the bigger thing is, I do believe that Patrick Mahomes has turned Josh Allen into Philip Rivers.”

“This was Josh Allen’s opportunity to be to be … Peyton Manning,” Griffin added. “Manning started 0-2 against Brady, then finished 3-2. If Josh would have got this one, he’d have been 1-3 against Mahomes, and I think that that would have made them confident that in the future that, ‘Hey, we can beat this team.’
“Now, they’re in no man’s land. They have no idea how to beat the Chiefs. … So now Josh Allen is on a Philip Rivers trajectory, and that’s not a bad trajectory. Philip just doesn’t have any Super Bowls.”
Rivers was among the top quarterbacks in his era, but similar to Allen, he didn’t have anything else to show other than Pro Bowl selections. Rivers had an overall record of 0-8 against Brady in his career, including three losses in the postseason.
Allen is arguably a better player than Rivers was, but he is the only quarterback in NFL history to start his career with a 0-4 record in the postseason against another quarterback. Allen tried to be Superman in the past, but that didn’t work out, and neither did it when he didn’t play risky football this year.
In the four playoff losses against the Chiefs, Allen has thrown for 1,039 yards, nine touchdowns, and one interception, completing 65.2% of his throws with a passer rating of 100.2. He has averaged 259.8 passing yards per game while also rushing for 267 yards and two touchdowns on 41 carries.
If Allen played in a different era from Mahomes, he could have won multiple Super Bowls by now. Unfortunately, that isn’t the case, and there are serious concerns about whether he will ever be able to get over the hump and make the Super Bowl.
The Bills did exceed expectations this season, as not many foresaw this type of success for a team that lost Stefon Diggs, Jordan Poyer, Gabe Davis, and several other key contributors in the offseason.
They will be even better next season, but they will be judged by how they play against the Chiefs in the playoffs. The coaching staff and the front office have to come up with a solution to completely change the way they approach the games against the Chiefs, and for that, they need to improve on both sides of the ball.
