Ex-Jets Scout Gives Blunt Take on Shedeur Sanders’ Draft Stock as Deion Exits Cowboys HC Race

An ex-Jets scout reacted to the news that Deion Sanders is not getting hired by the Cowboys and discussed how it affects Shedeur Sanders.

Colorado Buffaloes quarterback Shedeur Sanders has received a lot of attention this past season. He was one of the best quarterbacks in college football, and he played with another high-profile player, Heisman winner Travis Hunter. He also played under his father, former NFL star Deion Sanders. Shedeur Sanders is projected to be one of the top picks in the 2025 draft, but some scouts have doubts about his talent.

Ex-Jets Scout Discusses Shedeur Sanders Draft Stock

Deion Sanders has been the head coach of the Colorado Buffaloes for the past two seasons. In that time, he has turned the program around. Before he arrived, it was viewed as one of the worst Division I programs in the nation, and now it is capable of signing five-star recruits.

While Deion Sanders had repeatedly said that he was happy staying in Colorado, there were rumors that he would accept the Dallas Cowboys head coaching job if it were offered to him. However, on Friday it was announced that the Cowboys had hired offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer as their next head coach.

The reason the Cowboys chose not to hire Deion Sanders is not clear. It could have been the decision of the Cowboys, or Deion Sanders might not have been interested. It is impossible to know. However, former Jets scout Daniel Kelly chimed in with his opinion. He said that the Cowboys not hiring Deion Sanders means they do not see value in drafting Shedeur Sanders.

The fact that Jerry Jones didn’t hire Deion Sanders (and the marketing bonanza that would have been) tells me that the Cowboys scouting department doesn’t see Shedeur Sanders as a first-round value in the 2025 NFL Draft. It was supposedly a “package deal,” but it didn’t happen.”

Daniel Kelly is not the first person in the football world to express concerns about Shedeur Sanders’ talent translating to the NFL. This is a weak quarterback class in general, and as a result, there is not a QB who has been immune from criticism.

However, Shedeur Sanders in particular has a lot of people who do not believe in him. Notably, many fans and media members are concerned that if Shedeur Sanders gets to the NFL and he does not have Deion Sanders coaching him, he will not succeed. Deion Sanders has coached his son for his entire life.
