Ex-Cowboys All-Pro Sends Jerry Jones a Blunt Message Over Public Criticism of Mike McCarthy

Former Dallas Cowboys All-Pro receiver Dez Bryant wasn’t in the mood to entertain franchise owner Jerry Jones’ recent comments criticizing head coach Mike McCarthy. The Cowboys aren’t looking good currently, sitting at a shaky 3-3 heading into Week 8.

    Dez Bryant Weighs In

Jones, in full Jones manner, took a jab at the team’s offensive struggles during his weekly conversation with “Shan & RJ” on 105.3 The Fan, stating, “We’re designing bad plays, we’re designing bad concepts.”

It’s a brutal assessment that likely stung McCarthy, who is already under heavy scrutiny. However, Bryant had a different take. The ex-Cowboys star fired back at Jones, suggesting the team should have prioritized paying defensive coordinator Dan Quinn, who was eyeing the head coach position earlier this year.

Quinn, highly respected for his defensive acumen in his 30-year coaching career, has been a fan favorite for a potential promotion.

Bryant’s blunt message highlights the internal tension within the Cowboys’ coaching staff. While McCarthy has three 12-win seasons in a row under his belt, the 2024 season’s rough start has led many to question his place within the franchise. Jones isn’t likely to make midseason firings, though he’s done it before. For now, McCarthy’s seat just keeps getting hotter.

Dez Bryant Was on Jerry Jones’ Mind Recently

The Cowboys owner couldn’t help but praise his former star wide receiver, Dez Bryant, as he compared rookie wide receiver Ryan Flournoy to the former All-Pro. The Cowboys have been struggling with their receiving corps. CeeDee Lamb is not firing on all cylinders, and Brandin Cooks is sidelined due to injury.

During an appearance on “105.3 The Fan,” Jones raved about the 6’1”, 200-pound receiver, saying, “I’m anxious to see him make his first catch with the Dallas Cowboys, but he may be something special for us. On a personal basis, he’s got Dez Bryant stuff to him. Boy, is he an athlete. Glad to see him get this opportunity.”

The Cowboys acquired Flournoy as a sixth-round pick out of Southeast Missouri State. He impressed in college, catching 118 passes for 1,823 yards. With Jones’ high praise, Flournoy must show his boss that he can deliver for the Cowboys.
