Early Fantasy Football Start ‘Em, Sit ‘Em Picks for Week 8: Aaron Jones, Chris Olave, Jonathan Taylor, and Others

It's never too early to look ahead -- here are some start 'em, sit 'em options for your fantasy team heading into Week 8.

Week 7 was a tough week for fantasy managers with numerous injuries to deal with on top of six teams on bye!

Looking ahead to Week 8, every single team will be out there playing, and fantasy football managers should have plenty of options to choose from for their starting lineups. With that in mind, who are the best options to look at?

Here are my early start ’em and sit ’em picks for Week 8!

Start ‘Em Picks for Week 8

    Jared Goff, QB, Detroit Lions

It wasn’t pretty for Jared Goff and this Lions offense in Week 7 against the Baltimore Ravens, as they got steamrolled and ended up losing the game 38-6. The Ravens’ defense is no joke, though, and Goff had very little time to think as he was under pressure almost every single snap.

However, Goff and Detroit’s offense goes from a matchup against one of the toughest opponents for opposing passing games to the Las Vegas Raiders that just allowed former D2 college QB, Tyson Bagent, to have a decent first NFL start.

Goff and the Lions are going to be looking to get back on track this week, and they’re going to want to put that embarrassing loss behind them as quickly as possible. Expect a motivated offense to come out firing on all cylinders in this one. Goff’s a top-10 play.

    Jahmyr Gibbs, RB, Detroit Lions

Regardless of whether or not David Montgomery makes it back in time for Week 8 — which is not the expectation as of right now — Jahmyr Gibbs is going to be a solid starting option against the Raiders’ defense.

MORE: Fantasy Football Early Week 8 RB Rankings

Yes, the same thought process as Goff from above applies to Gibbs, but this defense just allowed D’Onta Foreman — who was a healthy scratch for the Chicago Bears the first few games of the season — to just rumble for three touchdowns on them in Week 7!

The Raiders are now allowing the sixth-most rushing touchdowns per game this year and the fifth-most fantasy points to opposing RBs. Gibbs may be a top-10 option in my rankings when it’s all said and done.

Aaron Jones, RB, Green Bay Packers

It has to turn around for Aaron Jones at some point this season, right?

After finishing as the overall RB1 in Week 1 against the Chicago Bears, Jones has been a massive disappointment for fantasy managers as he’s struggled to get healthy from a hamstring injury.

Even when he has been active, though, he’s seen limited opportunities, and he’s now burnt fantasy managers multiple times that have taken the chance and started him in Weeks 4 and 7.

Jones was a game-time decision coming into Week 7, which seems to indicate that he’s still not fully healthy. Expecting a full workload against the Denver Broncos may have been a bit optimistic, but another week removed from the injury to allow himself to get back to full strength will be huge.

Monitor the practice reports for Jones this week, but if he’s logging full practices again, he belongs in starting lineups against the Minnesota Vikings.

    Dameon Pierce, RB, Houston Texans

Dameon Pierce hasn’t exactly lived up to expectations so far this season. He has yet to finish as a top-15 RB for fantasy football in any week.

However, that week may very well be coming here against the Carolina Panthers off of a bye week.

The Panthers’ defense has been atrocious at slowing down opposing running backs from a fantasy standpoint up to this point, as they’re allowing a staggering 27 fantasy points per contest! The only team worse through seven weeks is the Broncos.

Pierce belongs in starting lineups this week as a low-end RB2 with plenty of upside due to the matchup.

Chris Olave, WR, New Orleans Saints

It wasn’t a particularly effective day at the office for Chris Olave in Week 7 against the Jacksonville Jaguars, but it’s encouraging to see that he’s commanded 25 targets over the past two games from Derek Carr.

MORE: Buy Low, Sell High Week 8 — Josh Jacobs, Chris Olave, and Jahmyr Gibbs Are on the Lists

Olave now gets a much easier matchup in Week 8 against the Indianapolis Colts’ secondary that’s allowing 27.7 fantasy points on average to the WR position. With a mini bye week to help Carr’s shoulder recover even more, Olave should be in line for a big performance.

    Christian Kirk, WR, Jacksonville Jaguars

It’s probably time to acknowledge that Christian Kirk is the clear WR1 for the Jacksonville Jaguars. While fantasy managers wanted desperately for it to be Calvin Ridley, Trevor Lawrence is locking onto Kirk early and often and featuring him week after week.

Now, Kirk gets a matchup against the Pittsburgh Steelers’ secondary that has been shredded by opposing receivers through the first seven weeks of the season. They’re allowing 35.5 fantasy points per contest, which is the second most in the entire league.

If you’ve got Kirk on your roster, continue to plug him into your starting lineup with confidence. He’s a top-20 WR for me yet again.

Joshua Palmer, WR, Los Angeles Chargers

What more does Joshua Palmer have to do to gain our respect? He’s put up solid production in Mike Williams’ absence, and he should have had an even larger stat line in Week 6 if there weren’t penalties called on multiple receptions of his.

Palmer’s coming off of a five-reception, 133-yard performance against the vaunted Kansas City Chiefs defense. He now gets a cake matchup in Week 8 against the Bears’ secondary.

Palmer’s a borderline top-24 WR with plenty of upside.

Darren Waller, TE, New York Giants

With Daniel Jones watching from the sideline, Tyrod Taylor has stepped in and captained this New York Giants offense well. It’s especially encouraging for fantasy managers to see that he’s working Darren Waller heavily into the passing game and making him a featured weapon.

Over the last three games, Waller has finished as a top-15 TE, and that doesn’t look to be slowing down anytime soon with his 26 targets over that time frame. Fire him up against the New York Jets with confidence.

Sit ‘Em Picks for Week 8

    Sam Howell, QB, Washington Commanders

It’s been encouraging to see what Sam Howell has done so far this season in his first year as Washington’s starting QB. He’s finished outside of the top 15 quarterbacks for fantasy just twice so far, and he’s exceeding expectations.

Unfortunately, he’s also on pace to set records for how many times he’s been sacked through seven weeks. Howell is currently on pace to be sacked 97 times this season, which is a ridiculous amount.

It doesn’t help that he now gets a matchup against the Philadelphia Eagles’ defense in Week 8 that features an endless stream of pass rushers to create pressure and make life miserable for the second-year QB.

If you have another option, I recommend benching Howell.

    Joe Mixon, RB, Cincinnati Bengals

This isn’t a full-sit for Mixon. You’re most likely going to need to still start him based on the construction of your fantasy football roster. However, I have major concerns for the veteran RB going up against the San Francisco 49ers’ defense in Week 8.

We’ve yet to see them play in Week 7 as of the time of writing, but we know that the 49ers simply do not allow big performances to opposing running backs. Going into Monday Night Football, they’re allowing just 13.5 fantasy points per game to the position.

Mixon’s going to have a hard time finding running room here. He has to find the end zone for you to feel happy that you started him, and that’s always a dangerous place to be as a fantasy manager.

    Jonathan Taylor, RB, Indianapolis Colts

Ladies and gentlemen, it happened! Jonathan Taylor is back! Twenty-two total opportunities for the dynamic RB in Week 7 against one of the toughest defenses out there, and he put up 20 half-PPR points en route to a top-10 fantasy finish.

However, that doesn’t instantly put him back towards the top of the fantasy rankings in Week 8.

MORE: Early Week 8 Waiver Wire Pickups

Taylor has another tough matchup against the New Orleans Saints in front of him. The Saints got gashed for two rushing touchdowns by Travis Etienne Jr. in Week 7, but they otherwise held him in check for just 3.8 yards per attempt on 14 carries.

The Saints are allowing the sixth-fewest fantasy points to opposing RBs this season, and Taylor’s going to have a tough time finding running room in this one.

    He can be viewed as a low-end RB1/high-end RB2 for Week 8.

    DK Metcalf, WR, Seattle Seahawks

At the time of writing, we have no idea if DK Metcalf is going to make it back in time for this matchup against the Cleveland Browns in Week 8 after missing Week 7 with rib and hip injuries.

Even if he does play, it’s probably best to play it safe with the veteran WR as he will have a very tough matchup in front of him.

The Browns are allowing just 19.2 fantasy points on average to opposing wide receivers this year, and Metcalf will almost certainly be playing at less than 100%. The practice reports will be crucial to monitor for Metcalf this week as we begin setting our starting lineups.

    Marquise Brown, WR, Arizona Cardinals

Marquise Brown was on a solid stretch of production from Weeks 3-5, but since that point, he’s begun coming back down to earth and has failed to help lift fantasy lineups to a victory.

Despite 18 targets over the past two games combined, Brown has just 83 receiving yards and no touchdowns. This has led to fantasy finishes outside of the top 40 each of those two weeks.

In Week 8, he gets a matchup against the Ravens’ defense that just demolished the humming Lions offense in Week 7. Things could get ugly here, even though it’s a revenge-game narrative for the former first-round selection.

    Dalton Kincaid, TE, Buffalo Bills

Fantasy managers are going to view Week 7 as Dalton Kincaid’s breakout performance and use it as an excuse to get him into their starting lineups this week against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

While Kincaid has all the talent to be a top-tier fantasy asset, this Bills offense is very difficult to nail down at the moment. They were forced to throw the ball a ton in Week 7, and New England was doing their best to eliminate the big play over the top, which forced Josh Allen to pepper Kincaid underneath.

While Dawson Knox will be out for the foreseeable future with a wrist injury, which makes Kincaid a bit safer of a play, he’s still far from a sure thing. He’s absolutely worth rostering and playing if you’re in a pinch, but I’d prefer to wait one more week before we fully rely on him as a starting option.
