‘Never Say Never’ – Eagles Owner Jeffrey Lurie Breaks Silence on Rumors He May Purchase Storied $6 Billion NBA Franchise

It remains unlikely, but Philadelphia Eagles owner Jeffrey Laurie isn't ruling out the possibility of buying a stake in the Boston Celtics.

The Boston Celtics are one of the most storied franchises in NBA history. However, a few months after winning an NBA record 18th championship, the team’s ownership group put the team up for sale. Many names have tipped their proverbial hat, including Philadelphia Eagles owner and Celtics diehard fan Jeffrey Lurie.

While he isn’t considering himself to be in the running, Lurie isn’t completely ruling out the possibility either. Speaking to the media, he revealed his intentions.

Jeffrey Lurie Is All Praise for the Boston Celtics

Born and raised in Massachusetts, Lurie has been a huge fan of the area’s sports teams. Before Robert Kraft took over ownership of the New England Patriots and birthed the greatest dynasty in NFL history, he was in the running against Lurie himself. Eventually, he had to settle for purchasing the Eagles for $195 million.

Since then, Philadelphia has been to four Super Bowls, with the latest about to begin in New Orleans for Super Bowl 59. In that 30-year timeframe, the franchise’s valuation has reached nearly $8 billion.

But, after missing out on his city’s NFL franchise, Lurie’s sights could have been on the Celtics, according to recent reporting. However, he believes those rumors won’t come to fruition.

“I would never say never, but I’m not looking to own another sports franchise. The Celtics again are exceptional, they’re so well run, they’re so talented, it’s my childhood team. However, I do not expect that to happen,” Lurie said.

Instead, Lurie is choosing to focus on the moment and the chance that the Eagles have to upset the NFL’s first-ever three-peat and seek revenge from two years ago over the Kansas City Chiefs.

“My whole focus is on my love of the Eagles and to win another Super Bowl for Philadelphia. I’m obsessed, as you know,” the Eagles owner commented.

However, he did give a specific shoutout to Wyc Grousbeck, the current governor of the Celtics, for the incredible job he’s done with his childhood team.

“Wyc has been an outstanding owner. I love the way they’ve developed that team,” Lurie said. “We’ve got to celebrate so many banners over the years.”

Even though it looks unlikely that he’s in the running immediately, it might be a case of Lurie trying not to shift the attention of players and the media from the incredible success that the Eagles are enjoying.

“Never say never,” as the 73-year-old said.
