Philadelphia Eagles News, March 18: Kenny Pickett Trade Grade, Oren Burks Signing, and More

    Published on

Here's the latest news involving the Philadelphia Eagles, including a grade for the Kenny Pickett trade and the signing of linebacker Oren Burks.

The Philadelphia Eagles have made several deals this offseason. Most recently, they addressed the team’s need for a backup quarterback behind Jalen Hurts on Friday.

Shortly after quarterback Russell Wilson officially signed his contract with the Pittsburgh Steelers, the team traded 2022 first-round pick Kenny Pickett to the Eagles.

In a trade officially announced on Saturday, the Steelers will receive a 2024 third-round pick (No. 98) and two 2025 seventh-round picks for Pickett and a 2024 fourth-round pick (No. 120).

    Kenny Pickett Trade Grade

Pro Football Network’s Nick Faria graded the Eagles’ trade for Kenny Pickett.

“One of the big debates going through Philadelphia right now is if they should’ve spent a relatively high draft pick (98th overall) on a backup quarterback who has proven very little at the NFL level,” Faria wrote.

“Pickett might be 14-10 as a starter, but his 62.6% career completion percentage and 13:13 touchdown-to-interception ratio were among the worst in football last season.”

Faria gave the Eagles a B grade for the trade, noting that in the end, because Philadelphia has two second-round picks and three total in the top 64, the organization has plenty of flexibility to accumulate a ton of talent in a loaded draft class. Pickett as a backup for two seasons isn’t the end of the world, and he solves an offseason need.

    Eagles Sign Oren Burks

Former San Francisco 49ers linebacker Oren Burks is signing with the Eagles on a one-year deal worth up to $2.5 million, per Dianna Russini of The Athletic.

Burks was a key special teams player for the 49ers for the last two years. He even provided emergency relief when the 49ers needed it on defense in Super Bowl 58. Burks played for practically three-quarters of the Super Bowl when Dre Greenlaw went down with a torn Achilles.

Burks was a third-round draft pick by the Packers in 2018 and played in Green Bay for four years before signing his second contract with San Francisco. He’s always been a special teams guy but saw a career-high in defensive snaps (326) last season for the 49ers.

Eagles Signing Jake Elliott to Four-Year, $24M Extension, Making Veteran Highest-Paid Kicker

The Eagles made things official with veteran kicker Jake Elliott on Sunday.

Elliott’s deal is for $24 million, per ESPN, or $6 million per year — tied with Baltimore Ravens All-Pro Justin Tucker for the largest kicker contract in the league. The extension also marks Elliott’s fourth contract with the Eagles, who previously inked him to a five-year extension in 2019. He’s now tied to Philadelphia through the 2028 season.

The 29-year-old Elliott is coming off a career year in which he made 30 of 32 (93.8%) field-goal tries, accounting for 135 total points. Through seven seasons, he ranks first in Eagles history in career field-goal conversion rate (86.2%), among kickers with at least 20 attempts, and second behind David Akers in career field goals made (168)

Originally a fifth-round draft pick of the Cincinnati Bengals in 2017, Elliott joined the Eagles just ahead of his rookie season. That year he converted 26 of 31 field goals, including a franchise-record 61-yard game-winner, and helped the team win Super Bowl 52. The Pro Bowler has also yet to miss a single postseason field-goal attempt, going 16 of 16 across six different playoff appearances.
