The Philadelphia Eagles have been one of the busiest teams since the start of free agency.
In a single week, general manager Howie Roseman has brought in dynamic players like pass rusher Bryce Huff, running back Saquon Barkley, safety C.J. Gardner-Johnson, and linebacker Devin White. Even with all the signings and extensions given to Landon Dickerson and Jake Elliott, Philadelphia still has over $35 million in salary cap space.
Despite their splashy additions, the Eagles still have needs to address on the roster. With plenty of free agents still available that can make an impact this season, here are a few targets at positions of need for the Eagles.
Eagles Free Agency Targets: Players Still Available at Positions of Need
Before the offseason began, the Eagles were expected to be a team that addressed their defense at all three phases with some minor tweaks to their offense. The team may not be through a full week of free agency but they have already addressed their pass rush, secondary, linebacker, running back, and offensive line rooms.
Despite the strong start, there are still positions that need to be addressed for the Eagles. Today, we’ll break down those roles and potential targets at those positions.
Quandre Diggs or Eddie Jackson at Safety
Despite CJGJ signing a nice three-year deal to come back as the team’s starting safety, the organization should still use another veteran in the back end. Sydney Brown’s return from ACL surgery makes his 2024 season a major question mark.
If the Eagles are as “all-in” as they say they are, addressing the safety position with a quality veteran makes the most sense. Philadelphia has plenty of cap space and could hand out a contract to veterans like Quandre Diggs or Eddie Jackson to pair with Vic Fangio and Christian Parker’s secondary.
Veteran Cornerbacks Such as Adoreé Jackson and J.C. Jackson
Avonte Maddox’s release still leaves a hole at slot cornerback. James Bradberry’s struggles in 2023 make the position one that must be addressed either in free agency or the Draft. Gardner-Johnson’s flexibility as a former slot corner gives the Eagles some added comfort in their current roster, but there are too many questions surrounding the development of Josh Jobe, Kelee Ringo, Zech McPhearson, and Isaiah Rodgers Sr.
In a deep cornerback class, it’s possible the organization targets one early in the 2024 Draft. In free agency, players like Adoreé Jackson and J.C. Jackson — and a return for Maddox — could certainly fill some of those roles and concerns.
Hunter Renfrow to Play Alongside A.J. Brown and DeVonta Smith
Philadelphia may have signed DeVante Parker to a one-year deal, but the organization still needs to address their third wide receiver role this offseason. Outside of A.J. Brown, DeVonta Smith, and Dallas Goedert, there has been a struggle to find a dependable player who can maximize the limited touches received when those players are covered.
One veteran free agent available that could fill that void is former Las Vegas Raiders WR Hunter Renfrow. While Renfrow’s production has dipped since his 1,000-yard season in 2021, he is a proven player at the position that could come on a value deal.
This won’t be a position they want to spend a lot of money on — especially as they work on a Smith extension — but it’s a role that could be uber-important for the 2024 season.
