Which RBs’ Values Changed for Dynasty Following Free Agency?

    Derrick Henry, Baltimore Ravens

When was the last time a 30-year-old running back was even ranked inside the top 24? The most difficult players to properly value in dynasty leagues are the old players clearly near the ends of their careers but still performing at a high level. It’s even more difficult when they’re running backs (because those are so rare).

Derrick Henry is not the player he once was. He’s also not done. The question is whether Henry has one year left of possible RB1 production, or two (I doubt he has three).

After four straight years of at least 18.9 fantasy points per game, Henry only averaged 14.5 last season. He was at 24.2 in 2021 and then fell to 18.9 in 2022. Henry’s seen his production decrease by nearly 10 fantasy ppg in two years.

Fortunately, there’s reason for optimism. The Ravens are a much better offense than the Titans. With Lamar Jackson freezing linebackers, Henry’s efficiency could easily rebound. I doubt we ever see 5.4 yards-per-carry Henry again, but could he get to around 4.8? I think so. Plus, Henry has 20-touchdown upside on the Ravens.

Rebuilding teams have no reason to roster Henry. But if you’re a championship contender, even at age 30, Henry could be a huge difference-maker in 2024.

    Devin Singletary, New York Giants

Given the current RB shortage in the NFL, it’s not a total shock that Devin Singletary earned himself a starting job. After all, he performed quite well last season, taking Dameon Pierce’s job on the Houston Texans.

Singletary’s dynasty value easily could’ve plummeted had he found himself mired in a timeshare or as a backup to a superior talent. Instead, he signed with the Giants.

While the Giants don’t exactly have a great offense, they also don’t have any other running back even remotely a threat to Singletary. Things can and often do change, but right now, it’s very much in play for Singletary to be a three-down back. And if he performs well, the Giants would have no reason to look for an upgrade.

Dynasty managers who acquired Singletary at what couldn’t have been an expensive price tag last season might have an RB2 for the next three years.

    Kyren Williams, Los Angeles Rams

One of the biggest wild cards in the dynasty right now is Kyren Williams. He’s either undervalued or overvalued, no in between.

The Wiliams we saw last season is an elite RB1. Given that he’ll only be 24 years old this season, a guy who just averaged 21.3 fantasy points per game should easily be viewed as a top-five fantasy RB.

Of course, we know why he’s not. Williams came out of nowhere.

The concerns about Williams will likely never completely disappear. He’s definitely much improved from his rookie season, but he’s still not a special player. Williams needs volume and the right offense. With Sean McVay and Matthew Stafford, he has it. But there’s no way to know how long that will remain the case.

The good news is the Rams didn’t make any moves at running back in free agency. They are undoubtedly going to add someone to their backfield, but at this point, that player will either be a journeyman replacement-level talent or a rookie. Neither is likely to be a significant threat to Williams’ touches.

It’s still difficult to feel comfortable about Williams long term. But, at the very least, his status as a top running back in 2024 looks solid.
