    Dolphins Announce Throwback Jersey Games

These throwback jerseys, which pay homage to the Dolphins’ 1966 debut in the AFL, have become a beloved staple for Miami fans.

On Wednesday night, the Dolphins announced that they will don their iconic aqua throwbacks in Week 2 (Sept. 12) as they face the Buffalo Bills on Thursday Night Football. Then, they’ll sport their classic white throwbacks two months later on Thanksgiving Day, Nov. 28, when they face the Green Bay Packers at Lambeau Field in Week 13.

The white throwbacks, in particular, are steeped in history. They were the original uniforms worn during the team’s early glory years, including their back-to-back Super Bowl victories in 1973 and 1974.

The aqua throwbacks have also seen success, with Miami winning both games last season when they wore them at home — first against the New England Patriots (31-17) and then on Christmas Day against the Dallas Cowboys (22-20). Wide receiver Jaylen Waddle is a big fan of the retro look.

“If it was up to me, I’d definitely have that as our every-week jersey, the throwback,” Waddle said last season. “I like it. It brings the swag out.”

On the other hand, the Dolphins CEO Tom Garfinkel also loves the nostalgia but told Palm Beach Post: “I love when we wear them. I love celebrating our history. I think they’re very appropriate for celebrating our history, and it keeps them special that we wear them a couple of times a year.”

Dolphins’ NFL Jerseys Over the Years

Since their inception in 1966, the Dolphins have had quite the fashion journey, with their jerseys evolving from classic to cutting-edge over the decades.

The team’s original all-white and aqua uniforms, in the iconic ocean aqua and citrus orange color scheme, made an immediate impact in the AFL. The Dolphins wore these jerseys in their back-to-back Super Bowl victories.

By 1988, the franchise changed, moving the helmet-wearing Dolphin logo to the sleeves and placing the numbers on the shoulder pads. This was just the beginning of a series of alterations that would continue into the next decade.

In 1997, Miami’s uniforms had three-dimensional numbers, adding a modern technical twist to their traditional look. However, in 2003, the Dolphins decided to shake things up dramatically. They debuted a bold new uniform in citrus orange during a Sunday night game.

The most recent overhaul came in 2013, as Nike took charge of the NFL uniforms. The Dolphins embraced a sleek design, retaining their historic colors but updating them for a new era.

The jerseys were refined again in 2018, emphasizing citrus orange, much to the delight of fans who appreciated the nod to Miami’s vibrant culture.

Despite these changes, the classic 1966 throwback jerseys remain a fan favorite, often regarded as one of the NFL’s best-looking throwbacks.
