The Miami Dolphins entered the 2024 season with high expectations, hoping to build on their explosive offense and make a deep playoff run. Instead, injuries, inconsistency, and a brutal late-season collapse led to an 8-9 finish, leaving them on the outside looking in when the postseason began.
Now, just weeks into the offseason, Miami has made a somewhat surprising but not totally unexpected roster decision — moving on from one of their most productive players a season ago. Despite leading the NFL in touchdowns during the 2023 season, veteran running back Raheem Mostert has been released, signaling a shift in Miami’s backfield getting younger at the position.

Raheem Mostert’s Agent Confirms His Time in Miami Is Over
The news was first confirmed by Mostert’s agent, Brett Tessler, who took to social media to break the story. Tessler posted this on X:
“Looks like my client Raheem Mostert will be playing elsewhere next season. Very thankful for his time with the Miami Dolphins, and this gives them a chance to get younger and gives him a chance to pursue a ring elsewhere.”

Mostert, who turns 33 in April 2025, had a career-best season in 2023, rushing for 1,012 yards and leading the NFL with 21 total touchdowns. He formed a dynamic one-two punch with De’Von Achane, helping Miami boast one of the league’s most feared rushing attacks. In 2024, Mostert missed a lot of time due to injury and, after only starting one game and playing in 13, finished the season with just 278 yards and two touchdowns.
What’s Next for Mostert and the Dolphins Backfield?
While Mostert will now hit the free agent market, there will be no shortage of teams interested in his services. The veteran speedster still has plenty of gas left in the tank, and several contenders could use a reliable back with his explosiveness and nose for the end zone.
The top free agent running backs currently are J.K. Dobbins, Jordan Mason, Najee Harris, Nick Chubb, Aaron Jones, Rico Dowdle, Jaylen Warren, Javonte Williams, Kenneth Gainwell, Kareem Hunt, and Cam Akers, according to PFSN’s Top Free Agents By Position.
For Miami, this decision means De’Von Achane is set to take over as the team’s RB1 after being one of the few bright spots during a tough 2024 campaign. 2024 fourth-round pick Jaylen Wright is expected to slide into the No. 2 role, giving the Dolphins a younger, faster backfield moving forward.
