Miami Dolphins RB De’Von Achane is one of the most dynamic players to enter the league in quite some time. He took the fantasy football world by storm with 51.3 fantasy points in his second career game. But it wasn’t all sunshine and rainbows for the rookie. Where does his dynasty value stand heading into the 2024 offseason?
De’Von Achane’s Dynasty Outlook
Historically, feature backs in the NFL weigh at least 209 pounds. I have no doubts that Achane would struggle to stay healthy if he were used like Christian McCaffrey. Fortunately, I don’t think that will ever be the case.
At 5’9″ and 188 pounds, Achane is technically undersized, but he may just be among the first in what will become the norm for modern running backs. We may see more and more players enter the league looking like Achane and Jahmyr Gibbs. If used right, they can still be excellent fantasy assets with limited volume.
Fantasy managers actually don’t want Achane touching the ball 350 times in a season. As a rookie, he dealt with a number of injuries, limiting him to 11 games played.
Achane may have only carried the ball 103 times as a rookie, but it’s impossible to average 7.8 yards per carry by accident. His 4.32 speed is legit.
RB Raheem Mostert will probably be back in Miami for another year, but at 32 years old, the bottom could fall out for him at any moment. Regardless, Achane is clearly the better player and should see a higher opportunity share in his sophomore season. Mostert may get the ceremonial start and goal-line carries, with Achane touching the ball slightly more.
On just 130 touches, Achane averaged 17.3 fantasy points per game. Of course, he had that epic 51.3-point game back in Week 2 to skew his average, but it still counts.
Part of Achane’s appeal is the uncapped weekly upside. We’re not getting — nor do we want — 300 touches. Let Achane carry the ball 8-10 times and draw up 4-5 passes for him. Somewhere around 240-260 opportunities is perfect. It’s just enough volume to produce at a high level while not risking injury or sapping his efficiency.

Achane led all running backs in fantasy points per opportunity at 1.36. Efficiency always decreases with an increase in volume, but he’s not going to suddenly turn into three yards and a cloud of dust.
Achane also finished third in evaded tackles per touch, fourth in yards created per touch, and first in percentage of carries to go for at least 15 yards. All of these metrics can regress a fair amount, with Achane still remaining one of the most efficient and effective backs in the league.

The running back position is in as bad of a spot as I can ever remember. The 2025 rookie class is supposed to be a banger. So, help may be on the way. But it still could be a good 2-3 years before the landscape looks anywhere near as strong as it did 4-5 years ago. Currently, many of the top RBs are either questionable talents or a little too close to 30.
Achane, meanwhile, is 22 years old and is one of a select few running backs you can actually build a team around.

If the Achane manager in your league is worried about him never really being a heavy-usage guy or always being stuck in a committee, you should absolutely fuel those narratives in an attempt to poach him away. That manager is probably going to be correct. If they don’t realize Achane can be an elite RB1 anyway, that’s your gain.
Achane is one of the best young talents at the position and is the type of guy it might even be worth buying high on.
