As the Houston Texans have enjoyed a renaissance this season by becoming a playoff representative, Devin Singletary has benefitted from his H-Town surroundings.
The veteran running back has put together his best statistical season to date. Now, new questions have surfaced on whether the 26-year-old could be up for a larger deal than what he was given this offseason.
Exploring Devin Singletary’s Texans Contract
Singletary arrived in H-Town following four seasons with the Buffalo Bills. He brought 3,151 career rushing yards and 20 combined touchdowns in tow.
Houston, however, only signed him to a one-year deal on March 21, 2023. Here’s what else came attached to Singletary’s contract per Spotrac:
- Total value: $2,750,000
- Base salary: $1,500,000
- Signing bonus: $1 million
- Guaranteed money: $2,500,000
- Dead cap hit: $2,500,000
Singletary was given a workable deal for the Texans. It’s also considered a “prove it” contract by NFL standards, as Singletary was tasked with showing Houston what he was capable of in its uniform — then possibly being up for something much better.
Well, Singletary may have potentially positioned himself for a more lucrative deal, plus a future with the Texans. Let’s look closely at his impact following his $2.75 million contract.
Looking at Singletary’s 2023 Season
Houston proved capable of damaging teams through the air and land thanks to the versatility of C.J. Stroud under center. Outside of the dual-threat passer, Singletary has provided more than a short-yardage option.
Singletary added a versatility wrinkle as well. He also managed to play in 17 games, including 10 starts.
The running back produced three 100-yard outings this season. That includes the 150 he racked up against the Cincinnati Bengals on Nov. 12. He also proved he can handle a hefty load for head coach DeMeco Ryans and offensive coordinator Bobby Slowik, as Singletary carried the football 20-30 times in four games.

The Texans were 4-0 in games when Singletary either had beyond 20 carries or surpassed 100 yards.
But Singletary was more than just an option for the ground game. He gave Stroud a reliable set of hands as a checkdown target at RB, producing his fourth straight season snatching 30 or more passes.
Overall, Singletary put together the most carries, rushing yards, and 100-yard games in his five-year career.
What Singletary’s Next Deal Could Look Like
Is there any chance of financial elevation for Singletary?
He’ll be 27 once the season ends. However, he helped end a division title dry spell for Houston while also delivering career-best numbers.
He’s been projected for a higher pay raise. Spotrac predicts Singletary will hit a new base salary of $4.3 million per year with his next deal. The 5’7″ RB is projected to earn a new three-year deal worth up to approximately $13 million. With that kind of deal, Singletary would become the 21st-highest-paid running back in the league.
Given his body of work for the AFC South champions, Singletary appears to be one of the more touted free agent running backs ahead of the 2024 cycle. He’s currently PFN’s No. 8 best free agent RB ahead of March.
