It’s the season of throwback uniforms, and the Detroit Lions are just falling in line. With Thanksgiving on deck, they plan to rock their classic throwback uniforms when facing the Green Bay Packers.
The Lions are 37-44-2 all-time in Thanksgiving games and are 0-2 under Dan Campbell. However, they are 8-2 this season, looking for their best record in the Super Bowl era.
Here’s a dive into the throwbacks for the holiday. Why are they different?
Why Do the Detroit Lions Have Different Uniforms?
The choice to wear throwbacks on Thanksgiving wasn’t a coincidence. The franchise takes the history of the game to heart. The Lions have played on every Thanksgiving since 1945, giving them the national spotlight every year.

The uniform combination will have their classic blue jersey with classic silver pants and blue socks. The franchise also announced on Wednesday that the jersey would come with a patch to honor the late John Madden.

The Lions have worn their throwback uniforms other times over the years. However, this is the first time they have worn them on Thanksgiving. In 2008, the team dropped the black jersey in favor of a throwback uniform to commemorate the franchise’s 75th anniversary.
The throwback uniform became the team’s permanent alternate uniform in 2009, replacing the former black alternate. The Lions also unveiled a new logo and uniforms in 2009. The logo was given a flowing mane and fangs, while the typeface featured a modern font.
Earlier this season, the Lions unveiled an alternate blue helmet. The helmet, which features the 1960s logo, is paired with the grey uniform. This was the first time the Lions had worn a blue helmet since 1955. They wore them against the Las Vegas Raiders on Oct. 30 and will wear them again in Week 18 against the Minnesota Vikings.
The first uniform worn by the Lions included a blue jersey with gleaming silver numerals, silver pants, and a silver helmet. Additionally, the shoes were black.
