Derrick Henry’s NFL Career: A Force To Be Reckoned With

Henry burst onto the NFL scene in 2016 as the Tennessee Titanssecond-round draft pick. His dominance at Alabama, where he won the Heisman Trophy in 2015, quickly translated to the pros.

One of Henry’s most memorable performances came in the 2019 postseason when he powered the Titans past the New England Patriots and Baltimore Ravens with back-to-back games of over 180 rushing yards.

In the span of his nine-year career, Henry has racked up astonishing stats, including five 1,000-yard seasons. A legendary 2,027-yard campaign earned him Offensive Player of the Year honors in 2020 and placed him fifth among all-time rushing-yard leaders. Eric Dickerson, Adrian Peterson, Jamal Lewis, and Barry Sanders — now that’s good company.

If any player deserved to go to a team that matched his talents, it was Henry. And in 2024, he did just that, joining the very team he destroyed in the playoffs.

The Ravens, known for their ground-and-pound style, were a natural fit for Henry’s bruising approach. Despite changing teams, Henry didn’t skip a beat and continued to rack up accolades while fueling Baltimore’s playoff ambitions.

“I’m happy I’m going somewhere where they hungry,” Henry said on “The Pivot” podcast in March. “And I know Lamar want one really bad, they trying to win it. I know they gonna come in with the right mindset and let’s get to it.”

Will Henry Get His Super Bowl Moment?

Although Henry has not won a Super Bowl, his unrivaled talent, paired with Lamar Jackson’s athleticism and supporting roster — his chances of winning it all have never been so high.

In an era where the efficiency of pass-heavy offenses has devalued running backs, Henry stands out as one of the most impactful players in the game, regardless of position. Despite individual achievements, Henry has eluded team success at the highest level. During his time with the Titans, the closest he came was an AFC Championship appearance in the 2019 season, when the Kansas City Chiefs ended Tennessee’s Cinderella run.

While a Super Bowl ring is missing from his résumé (for now), Henry’s career has been historic, and he shows no signs of slowing down.
