The 2024 NFL free agency cycle has been a busy one. With many moves going on around the league, one of the most notable is superstar running back Derrick Henry going from the Tennessee Titans to the Baltimore Ravens. While his landing in Baltimore isn’t surprising, many thought the Dallas Cowboys had a chance.
Despite that, though, they didn’t. According to Henry himself, the Cowboys weren’t interested. What happened?
Derrick Henry Says Dallas Cowboys Had No Interest
After a successful college career, Henry was taken in the second round of the 2016 NFL Draft by the Titans. He then went on to spend seven years with the Titans, playing in 119 games. He was a four-time Pro Bowler, two-time NFL rushing yards and rushing touchdowns leader, and a one-time first-team and second-team All-Pro.
Henry finished his Titans career rushing for 9,502 yards and 90 touchdowns on 2,030 attempts. That included a season in which he broke 2,000 yards (2,017) in 2020, when he won NFL AP Offensive Player of the Year.
However, he’s now with the Baltimore Ravens. At 30 years old, the team signed him to a two-year, $16 million deal, including $9 million fully guaranteed.

The Cowboys are also in need of a running back after their top two RBs in 2023 (Tony Pollard and Rico Dowdle) walked in free agency, with Pollard going to Tennessee. Despite that, they had no interest in Henry. “The Cowboys never called at all,” said Henry on Mad Dog Sports Radio.
“That’s where I stay in the offseason [Dallas]. I’m kind of on the back end of my career, and that’s a great organization,” said Henry. “It would’ve been a great opportunity, but I’m thankful that I ended up here in Baltimore.”
The Cowboys’ free agency decisions have been under fire since the legal tampering period opened on Monday. The Cowboys were the last team to make a move before re-signing punter Trent Sieg and were then the last team to sign a free agent from an outside organization before inking linebacker Eric Kendricks to a deal.
In addition to not really adding much talent in free agency, the Cowboys have lost five players to other teams. Those players are Pollard, Neville Gallimore, Dante Fowler, Tyler Biadasz, and Dorance Armstrong.
The Cowboys have still yet to sign a new running back, meaning their current starter is 5’5″ second-year player Deuce Vaughn, who had less than 30 carries in his rookie season. While it’s getting deeper into free agency and a lot of names are off the board, there are still plenty of guys the Cowboys could target.
In addition to still targeting free agency, the Cowboys also still have the 2024 NFL Draft to grab one if they want. Some names in the draft include Jonathon Brooks, Trey Benson, Braelon Allen, and plenty more.
