Is Derek Carr Playing in Week 18?

Updated at 11:30 AM ET on Sunday, January 5
Carr is inactive for today's game.

Interim head coach Darren Rizzi did not rule out Derek Carr returning from his left-hand injury earlier this week. However, the Saints’ starting QB did not practice all week and was formally ruled out on Friday.

We’ll continue to monitor the Saints’ injury report. You can also visit and bookmark our NFL Injury Tracker and Fantasy News Tracker for the latest updates.

    Derek Carr’s Fantasy Outlook

Carr had the potential to return this week for the Saints for reasons unknown, but his status shouldn’t be of concern in fantasy circles, given the carnage around him at the skill positions.

Even with talent coming in and out, Carr has failed to throw multiple touchdown passes in the majority of his games this season. That is going to render any pocket-locked signal-caller as close to useless.

I give him credit for trying to return to action and finish the season, but my fantasy bills aren’t paid on credit.

PFN Insight on the Buccaneers' Defense

The Buccaneers recorded their second-best grade of the season in the Week 17 win over the Panthers. Their 83.5 (B) grade was eclipsed only by the team's Week 14 showing against the Las Vegas Raiders.

Quietly, Tampa's defense has turned around since returning from bye in Week 12. A soft schedule has helped, but the Bucs rank second in EPA per play (0.12) and fifth in success rate (60.5%) over that timeframe. Four of Tampa Bay's five highest Defense+ grades have come since then as well.

The pass defense numbers are still ugly for the season, as the Bucs have the fourth-lowest pass defense success rate (52.2%) overall. That's even with the recent boost in form, as Tampa Bay actually ranks fifth-best (57.7%) in that category since Week 12.

The Buccaneers should be able to post a similarly high level of performance in Week 18 against the Saints' backups. That would be enough to clinch the team's fourth straight NFC South title before the competition ramps up in the Wild Card round.
