Deion Sanders, aka Coach Prime, has transformed Colorado’s football program, turning them into a must-watch team this season with a strong 6-2 start.
The 57-year-old Pro Football Hall of Famer has fostered a close-knit bond with his players, especially with Travis Hunter, a two-way sensation like Sanders himself who joined him after de-committing from Florida State.
Deion Sanders and Travis Hunter Bond Over Fishing
The Colorado head coach and wide receiver took some time during Colorado’s open week to unwind in an unusual way—by engaging in a hilarious “fish-off” at a lake. In a video shared by Coach Prime, he can be seen quietly fishing beside Hunter, and you can see that it’s not some friendly banter. Both of them are clearly determined to outdo each other.
Deion says, “You can tell when folk’s quiet, how it’s going,” while Hunter hits back with a playful, “0-0 to me.”
The one-time NFL superstar likened his interactions with Hunter to a father-son relationship. The connection between Sanders and Hunter isn’t new. It dates back to their time at Jackson State Tiger, where Sanders coached his son, Shedeur Sanders, with Hunter also on the team. When he left Mississippi for Boulder, he took both his son and Hunter with him to Colorado.Over the years, their relationship has grown beyond football. The former Dallas Cowboys cornerback spoke on why he values fishing with Hunter.

“We talk about everything. He’s a good human being, he’s not smoking, not drinking, not outside wh**ing, not doing crazy things. He’s got one of the highest GPAs on the team, he’s a great human being, and he can play, his character is second to none,” Sanders explained.
Hunter, a Heisman Trophy hopeful this season, exemplifies the discipline and character that Sanders values. Their fishing trips often serve as a chance to mentor and bond outside the game.
“That’s why I don’t mind fishing with him. And he coming to Texas. And we’re not talking about fishing on the boat, although we talk junk to each other all the time, but we’re talking about life. We’re talking about the next move. We talk about land acquisition. We’re talking about so many different things of life…,” the Buffs coach said.
This bond is paying off on the field for Sanders and the Buffaloes. Having secured bowl eligibility, Coach Prime and his favorite on-field weapon, Hunter, will look to finish the season strong. Fans are thrilled, and the NFL world is already buzzing about Hunter’s 2025 NFL Draft prospects.
