‘He Was Met With Resistance’ — Deion Sanders Reportedly Asked for More NIL Money Amid Cowboys Coaching Rumors

Amid rumors that Deion Sanders is interested in joining the Dallas Cowboys, his requests were reportedly rejected by the Colorado AD.

Deion Sanders is the head coach of the Colorado Buffaloes. He has done a good job of turning the program around since arriving two seasons ago. However, despite his success, there are rumors that he would be interested in leaving the team to join the Dallas Cowboys if the head coaching job was offered to him.

According to a report from NFL reporter Jane Slater, Sanders was “met with resistance” when he asked Colorado athletic director Rick George for more money for Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) and his coaching staff.

Deion Sanders ‘Met With Resistance’ After Asking for More NIL, Coaching Money

On Thursday, Slater reported that after Cowboys owner Jerry Jones and Sanders had initial discussions, Sanders went to Colorado athletic director George to ask for more money for NIL and his staff. He was reportedly met with resistance.

“One thing to watch following Jerry Jones and his initial discussions with Deion Sanders. Two people with knowledge of the situation tell me Sanders approached Colorado AD Rick George Tuesday about additional money for NIL and his staff. He was met with resistance. The University of Colorado would neither confirm or deny the information when I reached out. Deion Sanders didn’t respond when reached multiple times for comment.”

Sanders’ contract with the Buffaloes gives him a $5 million salary pool for his coaching staff. The Buffaloes reportedly ranked 44th in assistant coach salaries during the 2024 college football season. Comparatively, the Ohio State Buckeyes paid their assistants $11.4 million in 2024.

Although this report has not been confirmed by Sanders nor the Colorado Buffaloes, it is interesting to consider the ramifications considering the current situation. Sanders has reportedly expressed interest in the Cowboys and would reportedly accept if the offer was extended to him. Ed Werner reported that on Thursday morning, saying:

“Regarding Deion Sanders: I’m being told that he would almost certainly accept if Jerry Jones offers to make him the next Cowboys head coach, that those around him are encouraging him to pursue it and that Jones is enamored with the idea.”

If the Buffaloes are unwilling to give Sanders the resources he thinks he needs to build a successful team, he might be more inclined to take an NFL job. If he is already interested in the Cowboys job, he will likely be more interested after not getting what he wants from his athletic director.
