Travis Hunter is going strong in his second season with the Colorado Buffaloes, and as always, he enjoys the support of his head coach, Deion Sanders.
Coach Prime’s quarterback son Shedeur Sanders has been phenomenal in both seasons, leading the team with his offensive abilities, but the former NFL superstar is big on Hunter’s versatility on both sides of the ball. The Buffs HC declares him the best choice for college football’s top honor.
Deion Sanders Makes Choice Clear on 2025 Heisman
Deion appeared virtually on the “Big Noon Kickoff” from the Colorado hotel. On being asked about his contender for the Heisman among Hunter and Shedeur, Deion explained why he favored the two-way star over his son. As a matter of fact, the Buffs’ coach himself was a two-way phenom during his days.
Hunter has shined both as a cornerback and wide receiver for the Buffs, managing to keep up with and dominate in both roles. It is a rarity in modern college football. Though Deion acknowledges Shedeur’s importance to the team, describing him as “the catalyst” who “makes everything go,” he maintains that Hunter’s impact is unmatched.
“Shedeur is that guy; he’s the catalyst; he makes everything go, and he enables Travis to be Travis, but Travis Hunter is doing something we’ve never seen before,” Deion said, noting the teamwork between the two players.

In Deion’s eyes, no one embodies the Heisman spirit like Hunter this season. His praise for Hunter’s two-way talent marvels at what the 21-year-old football talent brings to the field.
Travis Hunter Has Strong Competition From Ashton Jeanty for Heisman Trophy
The race for the Heisman Trophy has heated up, with Boise State’s Ashton Jeanty emerging as a formidable competitor to Colorado’s two-way sensation, Hunter. Jeanty has been fierce this season, leading Boise State to an impressive 8-1 record while amassing 1,734 yards and 23 touchdowns.
Though he recently slipped from the top Heisman spot to fourth — now behind Miami’s Cam Ward, Hunter, and Oregon’s Dillon Gabriel, according to Marca. However, Jeanty’s consistent excellence on the field has kept him firmly in the race and made him Hunter’s most significant threat.
Meanwhile, Hunter’s impressive comments about his dual role fueled some buzz as he commented on Jeanty during his appearance on “Outta Pocket with RGIII.”
“Y’all see Ashton Jeanty, but it’s not like we haven’t seen a running back that’s good,” Hunter said. “We haven’t seen a player that plays both ways, and I’m gonna keep saying that.”
As the season heads into its final stretch, the battle between Hunter’s historic two-way play and Jeanty’s consistency will be a close Heisman showdown to watch.
