Davante Adams Breaks Down Decision To Leave Las Vegas As Raiders Fire Antonio Pierce and Tom Telesco

    Published on

Davante Adams mentions the uncertainty around the Raiders franchise, evidenced by the recent firing of the HC and GM, influenced his decision.

In October, the Las Vegas Raiders traded Davante Adams to the New York Jets. The star wide receiver reunited with Aaron Rodgers, but unfortunately, the duo weren’t able to make the playoffs with the Jets.

New York finished with a record of 5-12, while the Raiders ended 4-13. Las Vegas fired head coach Antonio Pierce and general manager Tom Telesco after the season. Adams brought up these decisions by the franchise in his recent explanation of why he left the Raiders.

Davante Adams Speaks Up on Raiders Exit

The uncertainty around the Raiders franchise contributed to Adams asking for a trade and leaving the team. He spoke about it during a recent appearance on “The Up & Adams Show.”

“The team gets the head coach fired, the GM fired, had like three or four quarterbacks play this year,” said Adams about the Raiders. “So me, as you know, I’m Davante Adams, trying to figure out what’s next in my life. Obviously, you have to take all these things into consideration and then, you know, weigh your options.”

The Jets star also said there were reasons that he cannot disclose in public that also contributed to him wanting out of Las Vegas.

“There was a time for me to go from the Raiders and did I go to the Jets and win every game? Absolutely not,” added Adams.

“Did I have an All-Pro year? No, I did not. But, you know, I changed teams, and I got back with my guy [Rodgers] and had a lot of fun… At the end of the day, you know, there are decisions that need to be made, and you got to make calculated decisions. And that’s, that’s all I’ve been doing.”

With Pierce and Telesco fired, the Raiders have to find a new head coach and general manager. They have the sixth overall pick in the upcoming draft, which puts them out of reach to draft Shedeur Sanders or Cam Ward.

Adams is 32 years old, and his timeline doesn’t fit with the Raiders. He had a chance to make a run at the Super Bowl with Rodgers in New York, and although it didn’t pan out, the future Hall of Famer has no regrets over the decision.

Adams Will Likely Be on a New Team Next Season

Both Rodgers and Adams will likely leave the Jets this offseason. The four-time NFL MVP is expected to get released by the team or retire, and the wide receiver can get out of his contract after this season.

Adams finished the season with 85 catches for 1,063 yards and eight touchdowns in 14 games. He still has a lot of football left in him, and various teams will pursue him when he becomes available.

The six-time Pro Bowler might take a discount to play for a Super Bowl contender next year. The likes of Buffalo Bills, Baltimore Ravens and Dallas Cowboys would be an ideal fit for him.

Adams has already played 11 seasons in the league, and the only thing he lacks from his resume is a Super Bowl. Hopefully, he will be able to work out a way to play on a good team next season, and not waste the last years of his career on teams with uncertainty around the quarterback position.
