Darren Waller Injury Update: Is the Giants TE Playing in Week 1?

    Published on

Darren Waller, the Giants' newly acquired TE, popped up on the injury report with hamstring tightness. What's the latest?

It is never a good sign when players pop up on the injury report mid-late in the week. It is also not a good sign when the player has a significant injury history. Darren Waller appeared on the injury report with a hamstring injury.

Reports coming out of New York around the Giants are that the injury isn’t serious and will not keep Waller from making his Giants regular season debut on Sunday. The thoughts around the team are that the Giants want to be smart with Waller. The Giants intend to give him a break with the hamstring tightness so he can be as close to 100% for Sunday.

Keep an eye on the injury report leading up to Sunday’s game, but for now, expect Waller to suit up for the Giants.

What Type of Impact Will Darren Waller Have on the Giants?

Waller will act as the Giants No. 1 receiver. Yes, he plays TE, but he will be the primary read in the Brian Daboll offense. We have seen Daboll with a history of getting the ball into his best players’ hands, so expect more of the same in 2023.

The Giants will have a balanced attack featuring the running and receiving capabilities of RB Saquon Barkley, but Barkley’s availability will only help Waller in the play-action passing game.

The Giants don’t have the receivers to compete with Waller. Waller has shown us he has a top-three upside at the TE position, and all reports point to a bounce-back season for Waller in 2023.

The Giants put their money where their mouth is this offseason when they traded a third-round draft pick to the Las Vegas Raiders to acquire Waller. Waller is no spring chicken, so you know the Giants want to focus him on the passing game in the short term.
