Dallas Cowboys defensive end Sam Williams was arrested on charges of possessing a controlled substance and unlawful carrying of a weapon in Frisco on Sunday night, according to Clarence Hill with the Fort Worth Star-Telegram.

Update: The controlled substance involved was THC, per the Frisco Police Department according to Hill.

Cowboys’ Sam Williams Arrested on Controlled Substance Charge

Hill’s report says, according to a spokesperson of the Frisco Police Department, the controlled substance charge is for alleged possession of marijuana, a low-level state felony. However, the unlawful carrying of a weapon is classified as a misdemeanor.

In Texas, possessing THC concentrates is treated as a felony at any weight, meaning anything less than a gram of THC would be treated as a state jail felony.

Williams did play during the team’s second preseason game against the Seattle Seahawks on Saturday and returned to Dallas with the team on Sunday morning. But, according to Hill, Williams had Monday off of practice and returned on Tuesday.

The team has not spoken about the incident, and Hill’s report states that they declined to comment but that the team is aware of the situation.

It’s possible that Williams could face a fine or suspension for the arrest.

The NFL’s Expectations and Standards of Conduct states, “It is not enough simply to avoid being found guilty of a crime. We are all held to a higher standard and must conduct ourselves in a way that is responsible, promotes the values of the NFL, and is lawful.”

Williams is entering his second season with the team after he was selected 56th overall in the second round during the 2022 NFL Draft.
