According to ESPN’s Todd Archer, Dallas Cowboys safety Donovan Wilson could miss 4-6 weeks with a right calf strain after suffering an injury on the first day of training camp.
The news comes after Wilson was evaluated in the injury tent for further evaluation during Cowboys practice. According to Patrik Walker, Wilson was in a walking boot for precaution and would get an MRI done to determine the extent of the injury.
If Wilson is indeed out 4-6 weeks, it would be enough time for him to suit up in Week 1 against the New York Giants.
What’s Next for the Safety Room Without Donovan Wilson?
It’s still unknown what exactly happened to Wilson during practice, but we do know that Markquese Bell was taking practice reps with the starters once Wilson exited. This is an interesting choice since Bell is one of the youngest in the group, but getting those reps could help him make that “second-year jump.”
Others who could take more reps in Wilson’s absence in the coming days besides Bell include Tyler Coyle, Israel Mukuamu, and Juanyeh Thomas.
Although it’s unlikely that Wilson would lose his starting position in the Cowboys’ “three-headed monster” with him, Jayron Kearse, and Malik Hooker, it could be an opportunity for the younger talent to solidify a backup spot.
Wilson led the Cowboys’ defense in tackles last season (101) after a resurgence. He had a healthy season with no injuries. In 2020 and 2021, he had issues with his groin, causing him to miss some games.
