The Cowboys had a typical Wednesday practice, which typically means it is a veteran rest day for some older players.

Tyron Smith was the only guy not spotted in the portion of practice open to the media.

The biggest storyline of the day was head coach Mike McCarthy not being at practice as it was announced that he was dealing with an acute appendicitis that required surgery.

In his absence, the Cowboys’ three coordinators, Dan Quinn, Brian Schottenheimer, and John Fassel, ran practice and will do so until McCarthy returns.

The team anticipates that McCarthy will return and be able to coach on Sunday.

    Injured Reserve Transactions

The Cowboys also made some transactions today, which included activating Hendershot from injured reserve as his 21-day window was almost up.

To make room for Hendershot on the roster, tight end Sean McKeon was placed on injured reserve, meaning he can’t be elevated for the next four weeks.

Lastly, tackle Matt Waletzko was designated for return to practice.

    RB Rico Dowdle

Dowdle was the only player with limited participation in practice because of an ankle injury he has been battling the last few weeks.

Although it has not kept him from missing any playing time, it has been a lingering injury that has kept him in the limited category during multiple practices.

    TE Peyton Hendershot

Hendershot has not been activated for the last three games, but that isn’t the case this week.

Hendershot suffered an ankle injury ahead of Week 4’s matchup against the Patriots and was placed on IR shortly after.

The Cowboys reported Hendershot saying, “Awesome to be back. [I’ll do] anything to help this team win … Whatever my role is, I’ll do it to the best of my ability. When I have a chance to make a play and rise above that, I’ll do it. That’s my mindset.”
