Dallas Cowboys Practice Report: Latest From Mike McCarthy on Jayron Kearse

Mike McCarthy provides the latest injury updates on Jayron Kearse and Tyron Smith, as the Dallas Cowboys prepare for Sunday's game against the Eagles.

The Dallas Cowboys continue their midweek preparation for the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday. But with Wednesday being a veteran rest day and more injuries popping up, how promising was Thursday’s practice regarding the team’s health?

    Tyron Smith and Chuma Edoga

During a press conference, Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy said that Smith, who is dealing with a neck injury, would not participate in practice and would work with Britt Brown. Overall, the goal is for Smith to participate in the walkthroughs on Thursday and Friday and to practice on Saturday.

Smith did not participate in Wednesday’s practice, but McCarthy said that he took part in Wednesday morning’s walkthrough.

Edoga was limited during practice on Wednesday as he deals with an ankle injury he sustained during Sunday’s game against the Rams. If he or Smith are unavailable, rookie Asim Richards would be the next guy up.

McCarthy said Richards is growing and getting better in his game overall. He gets work in multiple positions on the line, including left tackle.

    Jayron Kearse

As for Kearse, who popped up on Wednesday’s injury report with a toe injury, McCarthy said he would do more on Thursday. But the Cowboys are “being smart” with him right now.

Kearse was seen at the portion of practice open to the media, participating in team stretches and individual drills.

If Kearse isn’t available, Israel Mukuamu or Juanyeh Thomas would be viable options to secure the Cowboys’ secondary.

However, with Kearse being the team’s helmet communicator in Leighton Vander Esch’s absence, the next question would be who would take over this responsibility. But this might not be an issue with things looking up as he took more of a workload during practice.
