Dallas Cowboys News, March 5: Dak Prescott Is a Dad, Comments on His Contract Extension

Here's the latest news involving the Dallas Cowboys, including ESPN Stephen A. Smith's new rant, Dak Prescott's worth, and more.

The Dallas Cowboys are the constant butt of ESPN analyst Stephen A. Smith’s jokes. Monday’s edition of First Take was no different, with Smith ripping into the storied franchise for their lack of success.

    Dallas Cowboys News Today

Smith, along with former NFL players turned analysts Shannon Sharpe and Dan Orlovsky, got into a heated debate about the Cowboys having a winning culture. Dallas has had three consecutive 12-5 regular-season records but has gone 1-3 in the playoffs in that span.

“To say that the Cowboys don’t have a winning culture is ridiculous,” Orlovsky said. “They absolutely have a winning culture.”

Smith responded: “You’re utterly ridiculous! That’s asinine!”

The Cowboys are coming off of a blowout loss — at home — to the Green Bay Packers. Super Bowls are hard to come by, and Dallas hasn’t won one since 1995. In that same span, the Cowboys are 4-11 in the playoffs.

Former NFL Star Says Cowboys Need Dak Prescott More Than He Needs Them

Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott is headed into the final year of a four-year, $160 million deal that he signed in 2021. Prescott has the second-highest cap hit among all players with a $59.455 million number for the 2024 season. Only Cleveland Browns quarterback Deshaun Watson has a higher cap hit ($63.977 million) this upcoming season.

Former NFL wide receiver Brandon Marshall spoke on his “I AM ATHLETE” podcast about Prescott’s contract situation and how the 30-year-old QB has all of the cards in his favor.

“The Cowboys need Dak Prescott more than Dak Prescott needs the Cowboys,” Marshall said. “From a business standpoint, they have to play nice with Dak because Dak has all the leverage.”

Even with a large cap hit, Prescott has continuously put up solid numbers for Dallas. In eight seasons with the Cowboys, he has a 73-41 record and has completed 67% of his passes for 29,459 passing yards, 202 touchdowns, and 74 interceptions. Prescott additionally has 407 carries for 1,884 rushing yards and 28 rushing touchdowns.

The three-time Pro Bowl selection was also named the 2016 Associated Press Offensive Rookie of the Year.

“Dak Prescott got that fresh new new cut…heel turn coming 😂…he not about to play with y’all no more!”

Prescott was also compared to Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson by one user.
