The Dallas Cowboys and quarterback Dak Prescott have a long history together, stretching back to his selection as the 135th overall pick of the 2016 NFL Draft. He’s also in the final year of his contract.
Here’s what the Cowboys agreed to with Prescott on Tuesday.

Dallas Cowboys Owner Jerry Jones and QB Dak Prescott ‘Have a Mutual Understanding’ of Contract Situation
Prescott hasn’t received any offers from Dallas, according to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network, but a source claimed the two parties “have a mutual understanding of his contract situation.”
“We are where we are. We have our contract,” Jones said Tuesday. “We’re locked and loaded for this year, and we can see as we move along how we are thinking.”
The 30-year-old quarterback is headed into his ninth season in the NFL, all with the Cowboys. He’s in the final year of a four-year, $160 million contract that he signed in 2021. His cap hit is set to be $55.455 million, the largest in league history.
Prescott has a 73-41 regular season record with the Cowboys and has gone 2,595-for-3,873 (67%) on passes for 29,459 yards, 202 passing touchdowns, and 74 interceptions. He also has 407 carries for 1,884 rushing yards and 28 rushing touchdowns.

What Happens if Dallas Decides Not To Bring Back Dak Prescott?
There are several possibilities if the Cowboys decide not to bring back Prescott. The Athletic’s Jon Machota wrote about them in his latest piece.
One may include seeing what the team has in Trey Lance, who was the third pick in the 2021 NFL Draft by the San Francisco 49ers. After dealing with injuries and losing his starting position to current 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy, Lance was moved for a fourth-round pick last August.
“He’ll likely get that this season as he competes for the No. 2 job,” Machota wrote. “Lance is also scheduled to be a free agent after the 2024 season.
“If Lance didn’t end up being the answer, then the Cowboys would be looking to trade or sign a veteran or use a high draft pick on the position. All of these scenarios are significant gambles because there’s no guarantee they’ll be anywhere close to Prescott, let alone better. Jones has been fortunate to have Troy Aikman, Tony Romo, and Prescott for 30 of the 35 years as team owner and general manager.”

Could Free Agent RB Ezekiel Elliott Return?
Free agent running back Ezekiel Elliott played the first seven years of his career with the Dallas Cowboys. Elliott played in 103 games with 1,881 carries for 8,262 rushing yards and 68 rushing touchdowns, along with 305 receptions, 2,336 receiving yards, and 12 receiving touchdowns. He departed in free agency to the New England Patriots for the 2023 season.
Now, he may return, according to Cowboys Country writer Mike Fisher. But is it a good idea to bring back an aging running back whose last 1,000-yard season came nearly three years ago?
“Anyone with even the most casual interest in 2023 NFL football could tell you that Elliott isn’t what he used to be,” Fisher wrote. “But he’s Dak Prescott’s best pal … and right now, given the Jerry Jones announcement about zero movement planned on the QB’s contract (meaning he can be free in 2025) … this building could use some unity and bonding.
“Zeke lives within a football throw of The Star. He’s a two-time rushing champ who handled himself fine last year with the Patriots after Dallas dumped him. He’s a feel-good story. (Jerry’s got old Zeke T-shirts to sell.) He’s got no other offers. It’s not a great idea. But heck, the Cowboys seem to be fresh out of great ideas. Maybe any old idea will have to do.”
