Dallas Cowboys News, March 15: Dallas Never Pursued Derrick Henry, Cowboys Considered Big Loser in Free Agency

The Dallas Cowboys are still in limbo during free agency after signing LB Eric Kendricks. What more could they do? Here's more on the Cowboys.

The Dallas Cowboys have been relatively quiet this offseason. As seemingly always, there’s unrest in the air among the team’s fans, and after yesterday’s news that they never pursued Derrick Henry in free agency, it only intensified.

    Dallas Cowboys News Today

The Cowboys have only signed one outside free agent this offseason. Linebacker Eric Kendricks signed with the team after initially agreeing to terms with the San Francisco 49ers, per ESPN’s Adam Schefter. The team’s X (formerly Twitter) account posted about the Kendricks signing but turned the replies off to those not tagged in the post.

Fans went on to blast the move with one X user posting, “Replies turned off. This is the definition of a shut-up signing lol.”

He was one of many people who quoted the post with displeasure at the Cowboys’ inaction in free agency.

Pro Football Network’s Dakota Randall pointed out the Cowboys for their lack of moves.

“If it weren’t for signing Kendricks (who initially planned to join the San Francisco 49ers), the Cowboys essentially would have nothing to show for the first four days of free agency,” Randall wrote.

“Such is life when you rank near the bottom of the NFL in salary cap space. The Cowboys are loaded with talent on both sides of the ball, but they still have some holes to fill this offseason. At this point, it looks as if most of their offseason additions will come in the draft.”

Derrick Henry Opens Up About Free Agency — “The Cowboys Never Called at All”

Representing the epitome of Dallas’ lack of moves, the team apparently never gave now-Baltimore Ravens running back Derrick Henry a call. Dallas lost RB Tony Pollard to the Tennessee Titans, leaving a gaping hole at the position. Henry signed a two-year, $16 million deal, including $9 million fully guaranteed with Baltimore.

“That’s where I stay in the offseason [Dallas],” Henry told SiriusXM’s Adam Schein. “I’m kind of on the back end of my career, and that’s a great organization. It would’ve been a great opportunity, but I’m thankful that I ended up here in Baltimore.”

Henry has 2,030 carries for 9,502 rushing yards and 90 rushing touchdowns, along with 155 catches for 1,458 receiving yards and three receiving touchdowns in eight NFL seasons with the Titans.

Stephon Gilmore Free Agency Predictions: Potential Landing Spots Include Cowboys and Vikings

Despite the Cowboys being relatively quiet in free agency, there could be a fit for a familiar face to return to the team. No, it’s not running back Ezekiel Elliott. It’s cornerback Stephon Gilmore. The five-time Pro Bowl selection and two-time All-Pro played with Dallas in 2023 and had two interceptions.

Pro Football Network’s Tony Catalina believes that it would make sense for the two sides to reunite.

“Gilmore was a welcomed addition to the Cowboys’ defense in 2023 and played a pivotal role for the team, especially following Trevon Diggs’ torn ACL,” Catalina wrote. “However, Gilmore needed to have shoulder surgery this offseason, so his rehab and financial demands may complicate things.

“If they find a middle ground financially, and the team is comfortable with his rehab process, this seems like a highly likely scenario to monitor.”

Cowboys’ Stephen Jones Open To Signing Tyron Smith — ‘We Certainly Haven’t Shut the Door on a Continued Career Here in Dallas’

Tyron Smith is one of the best free agents that remains available.

He was selected as a first-team All-Pro twice (2014 and 2016) and second-team All-Pro three times (2013, 2015, and 2023) and made the Pro Bowl eight times. He has participated in 13 of the 17 games in 2023 and has started all 161 of his games.

Could he return to Dallas? Cowboys executive vice president Stephen Jones seems to think so.

“He’s had an amazing career, and we certainly hadn’t shut the door on a continued career here in Dallas,” Jones said via Jon Machota on X.

“He’s one of the great left tackles that have ever played the game. No one feels better about Tyron Smith than this organization …”

Smith is one of the league’s premier players at left tackle — when healthy. He’s played in just 30 games over the past four seasons.
